Plank thickness numbers get treated like horsepower ratings — bigger always sounds better. The truth is more nuanced. 5mm vinyl flooring is the practical sweet spot for most American homes, balancing dimensional stability, sound dampening, and price in a way 4mm products cannot quite match and 7mm products do not justify the upcharge for. What 5mm Actually Includes

The 5mm number is total plank thickness, but it is built from distinct layers:

For high-traffic main floors with kitchen islands, large appliances, and heavy furniture, 5mm SPC is the better mechanical choice. Reserve 7mm WPC for bedrooms and living rooms where comfort matters more than indentation resistance.

Wear Layer Pairings

Plank thickness alone is meaningless without matching wear layer. Common 5mm vinyl pairings in 2026:

  • 5mm core + 6 mil wear layer: Bedroom-only entry tier. Avoid for whole-home use
  • 5mm core + 12 mil wear layer: Apartment-grade. Acceptable for low-traffic homes
  • 5mm core + 20 mil wear layer: The residential standard. Buy this if budget allows
