Nail-down solid hardwood holds well in OSB when using 2-inch staples or cleats per NWFA installation guidelines. Engineered hardwood and laminate float over OSB without issue using a foam or felt underlayment. Sheet vinyl and luxury vinyl tile require a fully sanded subfloor with no telegraphing seams; some installers prefer plywood for premium vinyl jobs because the surface finishes smoother.
Where OSB Falls Short
For bathrooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms, and any space with regular moisture exposure, premium subfloors like AdvanTech or LP Legacy are worth the upgrade. Standard OSB simply does not handle repeated wet-dry cycles as well as plywood. For floors that may see slow leaks behind dishwashers or refrigerators, plywood gives more recovery margin before the subfloor needs replacement.
OSB also handles repeat fastener insertion poorly. If you anticipate future renovations that will require pulling and replacing subfloor screws, plywood holds threads better through multiple cycles.

Practical Installation Tips
Acclimate sheets in the conditioned space for at least 48 hours before installation. Leave a 1/8-inch gap at panel edges to accommodate seasonal expansion. Sand any high spots between adjoining panels with a belt sander after installation; differences of 1/16 inch or more will telegraph through finish flooring within a year.
