Fan manufacturers quietly standardized on small sockets years ago, which is why the bulb from your table lamp won’t thread into the fixture overhead. Ceiling fan light bulbs come in three base sizes — candelabra, intermediate, and medium — and getting the base, the wattage limit, and the LED spec right determines whether your fan lights the room properly or flickers, overheats, and eats bulbs. The Three Bases: E12, E17, E26

The number is the thread diameter in millimeters, and it’s stamped on every bulb base:

  • E12 candelabra: the skinny base, roughly 1/2 inch across — the most common socket in fan light kits made in the last 20 years.
  • E17 intermediate: the in-between size fans adopted in the 1990s–2000s; the hardest to find on store shelves, easy online.
  • E26 medium: the standard household base, found in older fans and larger schoolhouse-style kits.

Identify yours by removing a bulb and measuring the socket, or reading the label inside the fitter. If a bulb threads loosely and flickers, you’ve likely put an E12 in an E17 socket — a common and slightly hazardous mix-up. Socket reducers (E26-to-E12 and similar) exist for a couple of dollars, but adapters add length that can push the bulb into the shade, so treat them as a last resort.

Wattage Limits Are About Heat, Not Brightness

That “60W MAX” sticker inside the socket is a thermal rating for the fixture’s wiring and shade clearance, written for incandescent heat output. Most fan kits are limited to 40 or 60 watts per socket, and some fans additionally ship with a wattage limiter — a small module that blinks or cuts the lights if the load exceeds spec. This is where LEDs rewrite the rules: a 9-watt LED throws the light of a 60-watt incandescent while producing a fraction of the heat, so LEDs let you hit full brightness inside any socket’s limit. The sticker still governs the number printed on whatever you install — never exceed the actual wattage rating — but with LEDs you’ll never need to.

The Right LED Swap, Spec by Spec

Four lines on the bulb package matter for fans. Lumens: 450–500 per bulb (a 40W equivalent) suits a four-bulb kit; 800 (60W equivalent) suits two- and three-bulb kits — target 1,500 to 2,000 total lumens if the fan is the room’s main light. Color temperature: 2700K matches the warm incandescent look most bedrooms want; 3000K is slightly crisper; stay consistent across all sockets in the kit. Dimmable: says so on the box or it isn’t — non-dimmable LEDs on a dimmer flicker and die early. Shape: B11 torpedo and A15 mini bulbs fit candelabra shades; standard A19s often physically don’t fit under fan glass, which is the usual reason a “correct base” bulb still won’t work. Enclosed Fixtures and Vibration: The Two Fan-Specific Gotchas

Fans add two stresses ordinary lamps don’t. First, heat entrapment: if your kit uses a closed glass bowl, standard LEDs cook their own drivers inside it and fail in months — look for “enclosed fixture rated” on the package (many Philips and Feit SKUs carry it). Second, vibration: a wobbling fan shakes filaments and solder joints alike. LEDs tolerate vibration far better than incandescents ever did, but rough-service ratings still exist for shop and garage fans, and fixing the wobble with a $3 blade balancing kit is better than buying tougher bulbs. Dimmers, Remotes, and Flicker Troubleshooting

Most fan lights dim through a remote or pull chain rather than a wall dimmer, and remote receivers can be picky about LED loads. If your LEDs flicker at low dim or won’t turn fully off (a faint glow), the receiver is bleeding a little current through them — swapping to a slightly higher-load bulb set or a receiver designed for LED loads cures it. On wall-dimmed circuits, pair dimmable LEDs with an LED-compatible (CL-rated) dimmer like Lutron’s; a 1990s incandescent dimmer is behind most “my new bulbs strobe” complaints. Matching Bulbs to Your Light Kit and Shades

Bulb choice and glassware interact. Clear glass shades want decorative filament-style LED torpedoes (visible bulb, warm sparkle); frosted shades hide the bulb, so cheap standard shapes work fine; small schoolhouse globes need to swallow the whole bulb, so check the bulb’s overall length against the fitter depth. Why Fan Bulbs Die Early — and the Real Fixes

Fan sockets kill bulbs faster than lamps do for three mechanical reasons. Specialty Shapes: Globes, Vintage, and Task Lighting

Beyond the standard torpedo, three specialty swaps come up constantly. Exposed-socket and cage-style kits look best with G16.5 or G25 globe bulbs, which are designed to be seen and spread light evenly without a shade. Vintage amber-glass Edison LEDs (ST19 and smaller candelabra versions) nail the farmhouse look but carry a real lumen penalty — amber glass eats 20 to 30 percent of output and renders everything golden, so budget extra bulbs or accept mood lighting. At the opposite pole, garage and workshop fans justify 5000K daylight LEDs at the full wattage-equivalent the socket allows, where color warmth matters less than seeing the work. One spec worth paying a dollar more for in kitchens and craft rooms: CRI of 90 or above, which keeps food and fabric colors honest under the fan light you actually cook and work by.

Buying and Stocking Spares

Fan bulbs reward buying like consumables rather than one-offs.
