A properly built cinderblock wall outlives the people who built it, but a sloppy one cracks within a single freeze-thaw cycle. The difference is not skill so much as preparation. Cinderblock — technically concrete masonry unit, or CMU — is one of the cheapest, strongest building materials a homeowner can work with, and it powers everything from retaining walls to garage foundations to property fences. Get the footing right and the rest is repetition.
Cinderblock vs. Concrete Block
Most blocks sold today as “cinderblock” are actually concrete blocks. True cinderblock — made with coal ash aggregate — has not been mass-produced in the US since the 1970s. Modern CMU uses Portland cement, sand, and gravel, which makes it heavier (roughly 38 lbs for a standard 8x8x16) but stronger and more freeze-resistant. The terms are used interchangeably at most lumber yards.
Standard Block Sizes
Block walls are sized in eight-inch modules. A standard 8x8x16 block is actually 7-5/8 x 7-5/8 x 15-5/8 to allow for 3/8-inch mortar joints. Plan your wall length and height in 16-inch increments to avoid cutting blocks.
- 4-inch wide — partition walls only, no structural use
- 6-inch wide — short retaining walls under 3 feet
- 8-inch wide — most common, foundations and walls up to 8 feet
- 12-inch wide — tall walls, basement foundations, retaining walls over 4 feet
Footing First, Always
Every block wall sits on a poured concrete footing. The footing should be twice as wide as the block (so 16 inches for an 8-inch wall) and at least 8 inches thick. In cold climates, the bottom of the footing must sit below the frost line — typically 36 to 48 inches in the northern US, 12 inches in the South. Use 4,000 PSI concrete and tie two #4 rebar runs horizontally along the footing length.
Skipping the footing depth is the most common DIY mistake and the reason garage extensions and garden walls heave during the first winter. Pulling a permit forces an inspection of the footing depth, which is exactly why permits exist.
Mortar Mix and Joints
Type S mortar is the right choice for almost every cinderblock wall. It hits 1,800 PSI compressive strength and resists soil pressure. Type N is fine for above-grade non-load-bearing walls. Type M (highest strength) is overkill except for heavy retaining walls.
Mix one bag of Type S to about three gallons of clean water. The mortar should hold a peak when troweled but slump slowly. Keep joints a consistent 3/8 inch. Tool the joints with a concave jointer once they thumb-print firm to compact the mortar and shed water.
Rebar and Grout for Strength
Vertical rebar inside grouted cells turns a stack of blocks into a structural wall. For a 4-foot garden wall, place #4 rebar every 32 inches and grout those cells solid. For a basement or 8-foot wall, drop to 16 inches on center with #5 rebar. Lap all rebar splices a minimum of 24 inches.
Grout is wetter than mortar — closer to a soupy concrete. It needs to flow into the cells and around the rebar without leaving voids. Pour in 4-foot lifts and consolidate with a rod or vibrator.
Cost to Build
Material cost on a basic 4-foot tall, 20-foot long wall runs about $750 to $950 in 2026:
- Blocks — 80 standard 8x8x16 at $2.50 each = $200
- Footing concrete — 1.2 cubic yards delivered = $250
- Mortar and sand — $90
- Rebar — $40
- Grout fill — $80
Add labor and the same wall installed by a mason runs $2,800 to $4,000. For a basement foundation, you are looking at $18 to $26 per square foot of wall area installed.
Finishing the Surface
Bare cinderblock is not pretty. Three finishes solve that. Stucco — three coats over metal lath — runs about $7 per square foot and looks great in southwest styles. Parging is a thinner cement coat, faster but less durable, around $3 per square foot. Stone or brick veneer ties new walls into existing masonry, $20 to $35 per square foot installed.
For a quick visual upgrade, a coat of masonry paint (Behr Premium Plus Masonry, $42 per gallon) over a sealed surface lasts 8 to 10 years.
Sealing and Drainage
Below-grade cinderblock walls must be waterproofed. Roll on two coats of an asphalt-based product like Henry 209 ($35 per gallon, covers 50 sq ft) and protect it with a dimpled drainage mat before backfilling. Install a 4-inch perforated drain tile at the base, wrapped in filter fabric, and pitch it 1/4 inch per foot to daylight or a sump.
Tools You Will Need
Building a cinderblock wall calls for a basic mason kit: a brick trowel, a pointing trowel, a 4-foot mason’s level, a story pole, a chalk line, a wheelbarrow, a mixing hoe, and a brick hammer for cutting. Add a corded grinder with a diamond blade for clean cuts on end blocks and a tuck-pointer for finishing joints. Total tool investment runs about $180 for a homeowner doing one project.
When to Call a Mason
A short garden wall under 3 feet is fine for a determined DIYer. Walls over 4 feet, retaining walls holding back grade, and any structural wall belong to a licensed mason. The labor savings are not worth a wall failure that costs $15,000 to remove and rebuild. Spend the money up front, build it once, and the wall outlasts the mortgage.
