A dishwasher not draining completely leaves an inch of cloudy water pooled around the filter after every cycle, and it almost never means the machine is dead. In fifteen years of service calls, the cause is a clog somewhere between the tub and the drain — and you can clear most of them in under an hour. Work the steps below in order; each one is quick, and you’ll usually find the problem before you reach the pump.

Safety First: Cut Power and Water

Before your hands go near the sump, kill the power. Flip the dishwasher’s breaker in the panel, or unplug it under the sink if it’s cord-connected. Then close the hot-water supply valve on the line under the sink. You’ll be reaching into standing water and near electrical components, and those two shutoffs make the whole job safe. Spread an old towel across the tub floor to soak up the pooled water so you can actually see what you’re doing.

What “Not Draining Completely” Is Telling You

There’s a difference between a dishwasher that leaves a full tub of water and one that leaves a shallow film around the filter. A small amount of clean water sitting in the sump is normal by design — it keeps the pump seal from drying out. But if you’re seeing an inch or more of dirty water, food particles floating, or a sour smell, drainage is genuinely restricted. The volume left behind is your first clue: a completely full tub points to a hard blockage at the disposal, air gap, or pump, while a lingering half-inch is nearly always a partially clogged filter or a siphon issue with the drain hose loop. Keep that in mind as you work; it tells you where to spend your time.

Tools You’ll Need

Gather these before you start so you’re not climbing out from under the sink mid-job: a Phillips screwdriver, a flat-head, channel-lock pliers or a nut driver for hose clamps, a plastic cup and a bucket, a sponge and towels, and a straightened wire coat hanger or a plumber’s snake for clearing the hose. A flashlight helps you see into the sump. That’s it — no special tools, and nothing you don’t already own.

Step 1: Scoop the Standing Water

You can’t diagnose through a pool. Bail the water out with a plastic cup into a bucket, then sponge the last of it. If there’s more than an inch, it drained partway — that points to a partial clog, not a total blockage. Note the volume; a full tub that won’t move at all usually means the disposal knockout plug or a crushed hose, while a slow residual half-inch is almost always the filter.

Step 2: Clean the Filter

This clears more than half of all “not draining” calls. At the bottom center of the tub is a cylindrical filter — twist it a quarter turn counterclockwise and lift it out. Under it you’ll usually find a fine mesh screen too. Rinse both under hot running water and scrub with an old toothbrush. Food sludge, a peeled-off jar label, or a single olive pit will block just enough flow to leave standing water. Look down into the now-empty sump and pull out any glass shards, fruit stickers, or bones sitting on the pump intake. Reinstall the filter and lock it — a loose filter throws its own errors.

Step 3: Check the Disposal Knockout Plug

If you recently installed a new garbage disposal and the dishwasher hasn’t drained since, this is your answer. Every disposal ships with a molded plastic knockout plug sealing the dishwasher inlet, and it must be removed. Under the sink, find the smaller inlet on the side of the disposal where the dishwasher hose clamps on. Loosen the clamp, pull the hose, and look inside — if a plastic disc is blocking it, tap a flat screwdriver into the plug and knock it loose. Critical: fish the freed disc out with pliers. If it falls into the disposal it’ll wash right back into your dishwasher and clog you all over again. Reconnect the hose and tighten the clamp.

Step 4: Inspect and Clear the Drain Hose

The corrugated drain hose runs from the pump, up in a high loop, and over to the disposal or a standpipe. Pull the dishwasher’s kickplate — two or three screws — and look for kinks where the hose exits the cabinet. Someone shoving the unit back against the wall crushes it flat more often than you’d think. Disconnect both ends over a bucket (there’s trapped water) and check for a clog: blow through it or run a straightened coat hanger. Grease from the disposal side hardens into a plug right at the connection. While you’re there, confirm the hose has a high loop up under the countertop or a hooked-up air gap — without one, sink water siphons back and the machine reads as not draining.

Step 5: Clean the Air Gap

If your sink has a small chrome cylinder on the deck next to the faucet, that’s the air gap. Twist off the cap and lift the cover. Inside is a chamber that catches gunk; a plugged air gap will spit water onto the counter and stop the dishwasher from draining. Pull the hoses if needed and flush the passage with a bottle brush and warm water. This is a two-minute fix people overlook because they don’t know what the cylinder is.

Step 6: Test the Drain Pump

Still not draining? With the power off and filter out, reach into the sump and feel the pump impeller. Rotate it by hand — if it’s jammed by a shard or a toothpick, clearing it restores drainage. If the impeller spins freely, the water is clean, and every hose is clear, the drain pump motor itself may have failed. On most brands the pump is $40 to $75 and accessible from the bottom after you tip or pull the unit; it’s a 45-minute job. Before you buy one, though, listen during a cycle: a humming pump that won’t move water is usually jammed, while a silent one may be electrically dead.

Step 7: Run a Test Cycle

Restore power and water, then run a short rinse cycle. Watch the drain phase — water should clear the tub in under a minute and leave the filter area dry. If a dishwasher not draining completely still shows residual water, recheck the high loop and the air gap, since a siphon problem returns intermittently and fools people into replacing parts they don’t need.

Don’t Overlook the Check Valve

Many dishwashers have a small check valve or flapper at the pump outlet that stops drained water from flowing back into the tub. If it sticks open or a piece of debris holds it ajar, water siphons back and you’ll swear the machine won’t drain when it actually did — it just refilled itself. The valve is usually a rubber flap near where the drain hose leaves the pump. With the power off, feel that it moves freely and seats flat. A stiff or gummed-up flapper gets cleaned or replaced for a few dollars, and it’s a fix people almost never think to check.

A Word on Drain Cleaners and Baking Soda

Skip the chemical drain cleaners. They’re formulated for sink and tub drains, not for the rubber seals and plastic housings inside a dishwasher, and they can damage components while doing little for a solid clog like a bone or a knockout plug. If you want a gentle flush for grease film, pour a cup of baking soda followed by a cup of white vinegar into the standing water, let it foam for 15 minutes, then run a hot rinse. That’s safe and helps with sludge, but it won’t clear a mechanical blockage — for those, you have to physically remove the debris using the steps above.

Prevent It From Coming Back

Scrape plates instead of rinsing them spotless — a little food helps the detergent work, but bones, pits, and stickers are what clog you. Pull and rinse the filter monthly. Run a hot empty cycle with two cups of white vinegar every few weeks to cut grease in the hose. Do that, and a dishwasher not draining completely becomes a once-a-year annoyance instead of a weekly headache.
