Building a Very Low Deck Over Concrete: The Right Way

Covering an ugly, cracked patio slab with wood is one of the most satisfying weekend upgrades you can make, but a very low deck over concrete breaks most of the normal deck rules. You have almost no vertical room to work with, you can’t dig footings into a slab, and water that used to run off now has to escape from a shallow cavity. Build it like a standard raised deck and it will trap moisture and rot within a few years. Build it like a floating floor with drainage in mind, and it will outlast the slab underneath it.

Here’s how the low-profile approach actually works and where the pitfalls hide.

The Core Challenge: No Room to Frame

A conventional deck floats on 2×8 or 2×10 joists a couple feet off the ground. Over a slab, you might have only 3 to 6 inches before a door threshold or a grade transition forces your hand. That kills standard joists. Instead, you build on a low framework of 2x4s laid flat, or a sleeper system, that raises the deck boards just enough to shed water while keeping the finished surface below the threshold. Every inch counts, so plan your total buildup — sleeper plus board thickness — before you buy anything.

The good news: because the slab already carries the load, you don’t need footings, frost-depth digging, or heavy beams. The slab is your foundation. Your job is just to float a wearing surface over it without trapping water.

Sleeper Systems: The Standard Method

A sleeper system is a grid of ground-contact treated lumber laid directly on the slab to support the decking. The most common version uses 2x4s laid flat, spaced 12 to 16 inches on center, running perpendicular to your deck boards. Laid flat, a 2×4 raises the surface just 1.5 inches; add a 5/4 deck board and your total buildup is about 2.5 inches — low enough to slip under most thresholds.

Two rules make or break a sleeper deck:

  • Use only ground-contact rated pressure-treated lumber for the sleepers. Standard above-ground PT sitting on damp concrete rots fast; ground-contact treatment is formulated for exactly this exposure.
  • Never let wood sit directly in standing water. Set the sleepers on strips of composite shim, plastic deck-support pads, or a bead of adhesive with rubber pads so water can pass underneath rather than pool against the wood.

Run the sleepers so channels between them align with the slab’s slope, giving water a clear path to daylight instead of a series of dams.

Drainage Is Everything

The number one killer of low decks over concrete is trapped water. Your slab almost certainly slopes slightly for drainage — usually about 1/4 inch per foot away from the house. Respect that slope. Orient sleepers so water runs along the channels between them and off the edge, never across them where each sleeper becomes a little dam holding water against the next.

Leave the perimeter open so air moves through and moisture evaporates. Don’t wrap the deck edge tight to the ground with solid skirting unless you build in vents. A low deck needs to breathe; seal it up and you’ve built a moisture sandwich that will grow mold and rot the sleepers from below. If the slab holds puddles in spots, patch those low areas or add a self-leveling channel before you frame, because standing water under wood is a countdown to failure.

Adjustable Pedestals: The No-Rot Alternative

When the slab is out of level, cracked, or you want zero wood touching concrete, adjustable pedestal supports are the pro move. These plastic feet screw up and down to dial in height and level, and they hold either a joist framework or deck tiles above the slab with a continuous air gap underneath. Because nothing wood contacts the concrete and water flows freely below, rot essentially stops being a concern.

Pedestals shine on a slab that has settled unevenly — you level the deck surface with a wrench instead of shimming a hundred points by hand. They cost more than a sleeper grid, running a few dollars per pedestal with several needed per square yard, but on a bad slab they save enormous fussing and deliver a dead-flat, fully drained, long-lasting result.

Deck Tiles: The Fastest Option

If you don’t need to slide under a threshold and just want to cover the slab, interlocking deck tiles are the quickest path of all. These 12-by-12 or 20-by-20 inch squares snap together over a molded plastic base that lifts the wearing surface about 1 inch off the concrete, built-in drainage channels included. You lay them like a puzzle straight onto a clean slab — no fasteners, no framing, no saw.

Tiles come in ipe, acacia, composite, and porcelain. Expect to pay roughly $4 to $12 per square foot depending on material. They’re perfect for renters and for anyone who wants a reversible upgrade, since you can lift and re-lay them anytime. The limits: they need a reasonably flat slab, they won’t span cracks or holes, and the seams can collect grit, so they suit a clean patio better than a heaving driveway.

Fastening the Deck Boards

Attach 5/4×6 or 2×6 boards to the sleepers with hot-dipped galvanized or stainless coated deck screws — two per sleeper crossing. Keep a 1/8 to 1/4 inch gap between boards so water drains through and air circulates; tight boards trap water on the surface and starve the cavity of airflow. Predrill near board ends to prevent splitting, since you have no room to hide a cracked end.

A hidden-fastener system works with grooved boards and gives a clean, screw-free top, but face-screwing is simpler and just as durable when you seal the screw heads. Keep the finished surface at least 1/8 inch below any door threshold so the door still swings and water can’t wick indoors.

Threshold and Siding Clearances

Two clearances protect your house from the new deck. First, keep the finished deck surface at least an inch below the interior door threshold so wind-driven rain and snowmelt cannot sheet under the door. Second, watch the wall where the deck meets the house. On homes with vinyl or fiber-cement siding, there is a weep screed or a starter gap at the bottom of the wall that must stay open to let the wall drain and dry. If your low deck buries that screed, water gets trapped behind the siding and rots the wall from behind, a far more expensive problem than a rotted sleeper. Hold the decking down away from the siding and never build the surface up against it. When in doubt, leave a small gap along the house edge for drainage and airflow.

Do You Need a Railing?

This is where a low deck pays off. Under the IRC, a guardrail is only required when the walking surface sits more than 30 inches above the grade next to it. A deck floated a few inches over a patio slab is nowhere near that trigger, so you get an open, seamless, patio-like surface with no rail to build, no posts to anchor, and no guard-load engineering to worry about. That rail-free look is the whole appeal for most homeowners, and it keeps the project firmly in weekend-DIY territory. If your slab happens to sit atop a retaining wall or a drop-off, measure to the grade below before assuming you are exempt.

What It Costs to Build

Because the slab is free foundation, this is one of the cheapest decks you can build. A DIY sleeper-and-treated-board surface runs about $6 to $12 per square foot in materials. Step up to capped composite boards on sleepers and you are at $10 to $18 per square foot. Snap-together deck tiles land at $4 to $12 per square foot with no framing at all, and an adjustable-pedestal system with a joist grid runs $12 to $22 per square foot in materials for a bad slab. Hire a contractor and installed prices roughly double, landing around $20 to $40 per square foot, still far below the cost of demolishing the slab and framing a raised deck from footings.

Prepping the Slab Before You Build

The slab does all the load-bearing work, so its condition determines how well the deck sits. Start by cleaning it thoroughly and letting it dry, then check for two things: cracks and drainage. Hairline cracks are cosmetic and fine to build over, but a crack with vertical displacement — one side sitting higher than the other — means the slab is heaving or settling, and you’ll want adjustable pedestals rather than fixed sleepers so you can level over the movement. Pour a little water in a few spots and watch where it goes. Anywhere it pools instead of running off marks a low area you should patch or plan your sleeper channels to drain.

If the slab holds standing water against a wall or door, address that first with a self-leveling patch or by grinding a shallow drainage channel. Building a wood deck over a slab that puddles is asking the sleepers to sit in water, and no amount of ground-contact treatment survives that indefinitely. An hour of slab prep saves you a rebuild.

Ground Clearance and Ventilation Details

The tension in a low deck is always between staying under the threshold and leaving enough air gap to shed moisture. Aim for at least a 1/2-inch air path under the sleepers and open ends on the channels so air can move through and dry the cavity. Even a low deck breathes if you don’t seal the perimeter tight to the ground. If you want finished skirting for looks, build in vents or leave a continuous gap at the bottom so the underside isn’t a sealed, damp box.

Keep the finished deck surface a minimum of 1/8 inch below any door threshold and slope it, however slightly, away from the house so water sheds outward. On a doorway landing, that tiny slope keeps rain from wicking back toward the sill. These are small details, but they’re the difference between a low deck that dries out after every storm and one that quietly rots from beneath while looking fine on top.

Putting It Together

A durable very low deck over concrete comes down to three principles: keep the buildup shallow, keep the wood out of standing water, and give moisture a way out. Choose sleepers for the cheapest custom build on a decent slab, pedestals for a bad or out-of-level slab, and snap-together tiles for the fastest reversible cover-up. Use ground-contact lumber and stainless-class fasteners throughout, honor the slab’s existing slope, and leave the perimeter open to breathe. Do that and you’ll transform a tired patio into a warm wood surface that drains, dries, and lasts — without a single footing dug.
