Doorbell Wiring Diagram: How to Install and Troubleshoot

A wired doorbell system has only three components — a transformer, a push button, and a chime unit — connected by low-voltage wire. Despite this simplicity, doorbell wiring confuses many homeowners because the circuit works differently from standard household electrical. A clear doorbell wiring diagram shows exactly how these three parts connect and makes installation or troubleshooting a straightforward 30-minute project.

How a Wired Doorbell Circuit Works

Your home’s 120-volt electrical system feeds into a small transformer, usually mounted on a junction box in the basement, garage, or utility closet. The transformer steps the voltage down to 16-24 volts AC, which is safe to work with and sufficient to power the chime. Two low-voltage wires run from the transformer: one goes to the doorbell button at the front door, and one goes to the chime unit (typically mounted in a hallway).

When no one presses the button, the circuit is open and no current flows. Pressing the button closes the circuit, allowing current to flow from the transformer through the button, to the chime, and back to the transformer. The chime’s electromagnet strikes a tone bar, producing the familiar ding or ding-dong sound. Release the button, and the circuit opens again.

The Basic Doorbell Wiring Diagram

The wiring path follows a simple loop with three connection points.

  1. Transformer terminal 1 connects to the “Trans” or “T” terminal on the chime unit
  2. The “Front” or “F” terminal on the chime unit connects to one screw on the doorbell button
  3. The other screw on the doorbell button connects back to transformer terminal 2

That completes the loop. Current flows from the transformer, through the chime, through the button (when pressed), and back to the transformer. The wire gauge is typically 18-gauge or 20-gauge thermostat wire (also called bell wire), available for $10-$15 per 50-foot roll.

Adding a Second Doorbell Button

Homes with a back door or side entrance often need a second button. The wiring is nearly identical, with one addition. The chime unit has three terminals: “Trans,” “Front,” and “Rear.” The second button wires the same way as the first, except it connects to the “Rear” terminal instead of “Front.”

  • Transformer terminal 1 to chime “Trans” terminal (same as before)
  • Chime “Front” terminal to front doorbell button, back to transformer terminal 2
  • Chime “Rear” terminal to rear doorbell button, back to transformer terminal 2

Most chime units produce a “ding-dong” for the front button and a single “ding” for the rear, so you know which door has a visitor without checking.

Transformer Installation

The transformer is the one part of a doorbell wiring diagram that involves line voltage. Mount it on a standard electrical junction box and connect the primary (input) wires to a 120-volt circuit, typically by pigtailing onto an existing outlet or light switch circuit. The secondary (output) terminals provide the 16-24 volt low-voltage power for the doorbell circuit.

Choose a transformer rated for your chime’s requirements. Most mechanical chimes need a 16-volt, 10VA transformer ($10-$15). Electronic chimes with built-in speakers may require 16-24 volts at 20-30VA. Using a transformer with insufficient VA rating produces a weak, quiet chime. Over-rating the transformer is fine and does not harm the chime.

If you are not comfortable working with 120-volt wiring, hire a licensed electrician for the transformer installation. The low-voltage doorbell wiring beyond the transformer is safe for DIY work.

Troubleshooting a Doorbell That Does Not Ring

Work through the circuit systematically from the button to the transformer.

Test the button: Remove the button from the wall (two screws) and touch the two wires together. If the chime sounds, the button is faulty. Replace it ($5-$10). If the chime does not sound, the problem is elsewhere in the circuit.

Test the transformer: Use a multimeter set to AC voltage on the transformer’s secondary terminals. You should read 16-24 volts. Zero volts means the transformer has failed or lost power from the breaker. Replace the transformer ($10-$15) or check the breaker.

Test the chime: With the transformer confirmed working, disconnect the wires at the chime terminals and touch the “Trans” and “Front” wires together briefly. A small spark confirms power is reaching the chime. If the chime still does not sound with power present, the chime unit is faulty. Replacement chimes cost $15-$40.

Check the wiring: Corroded or broken wire connections are the most common cause of doorbell failure in older homes. Inspect each connection point for green corrosion, loose screws, or broken strands. Clean corroded terminals with fine sandpaper and retighten all screws.

Upgrading to a Smart Doorbell

Smart video doorbells like Ring and Google Nest use the existing doorbell wiring for power, eliminating the need for battery charging. Verify that your transformer outputs at least 16 volts and 20-30VA, as smart doorbells draw more power than mechanical chimes. Many installations require upgrading the transformer, a $15 part and 20 minutes of work.

The existing doorbell button wires connect directly to the smart doorbell’s terminals. Most smart doorbells include a plug-in chime adapter or connect to the existing mechanical chime with a compatibility kit. Follow the manufacturer’s doorbell wiring diagram for the specific model since terminal labeling varies between brands.

Wiring Tips for a Clean Installation

Run bell wire through the wall cavity rather than surface-mounting for a professional appearance. Use wire staples rated for low-voltage cable to secure runs along joists and studs. Leave 6-8 inches of extra wire at each connection point so future repairs do not require pulling new cable. Label each wire at the chime box (“front,” “rear,” “transformer”) with tape flags to eliminate guesswork during future troubleshooting. A properly wired doorbell system lasts 15-20 years or more with zero maintenance beyond an occasional button replacement.
