The cheapest bid is almost never the best value. Mid-range bids that include thicker base prep usually outlast bargain installs by a decade or more.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign

The warranty answer reveals the most. Concrete will hairline crack — that is physics — but a two-year workmanship warranty on settling, scaling, or structural cracks is reasonable. Contractors who refuse to put anything in writing are telling you something important.

Base Prep Is Where Bad Driveways Are Born

Concrete cannot fix bad soil. A proper base for a residential driveway involves stripping topsoil down to undisturbed subgrade, then placing 4 to 6 inches of compacted Class II road base or 3/4-inch crushed limestone. Compaction should happen in two-inch lifts using a plate compactor or, for larger jobs, a vibratory roller.

Watch the crew during base prep. If they spread base and pour the same day without a plate compactor running for at least an hour, the slab will settle unevenly within five years. This is the single biggest difference between contractors who specialize in driveways and crews who pour everything from patios to slabs without distinction.

Reinforcement Choices

Three options dominate residential work. Welded wire mesh costs the least, runs about $0.40 per square foot installed, and resists cracking adequately on a well-prepped base. Number 4 rebar (half-inch diameter) on an 18-inch grid is the standard for heavy vehicles and adds roughly $1.50 per square foot. Expansion and Control Joints

Control joints are the saw cuts in your finished driveway, typically spaced 8 to 12 feet apart depending on slab thickness. They give the concrete a planned place to crack as it cures and shrinks.
