Ask three contractors where to put a dryer duct and you will get three different heights, because the code books never spell out a single number for the connection behind the machine. Getting the dryer vent height from floor right actually means solving two separate problems: where the rough-in lands on the wall behind the dryer, and how high the exhaust hood terminates above grade outside. Miss the first one and the dryer sits 6 inches off the wall with a crushed foil hose behind it. Miss the second and the flapper spends every January buried in a snowdrift, blowing moist lint back into the duct.

What the Code Actually Requires
The International Residential Code covers dryer exhaust in Section M1502, and it is more concerned with where the duct ends than where it starts. The termination must sit at least 3 feet from any opening into the building — windows, doors, soffit vents, gas meter regulators — and it must discharge outdoors with a backdraft damper and no screen. The International Mechanical Code, Section 504.4, adds the number most inspectors quote: the exhaust hood must terminate not less than 12 inches above finished grade. Several dryer manufacturers, including Whirlpool and LG, echo that 12-inch figure in their installation manuals, and a manufacturer instruction carries code weight under IRC M1502.3.
Notice what is missing: no code section dictates the interior duct height behind the appliance. That measurement is driven by the dryer itself, the direction the duct runs, and whether you are using a recessed dryer box. In other words, the outside height is a code question and the inside height is a fitment question. Treat them separately and both get easier.
Interior Rough-In Height Behind the Dryer
Every residential dryer exhausts through a 4-inch collar on the back of the cabinet, and on nearly all current models — GE, Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Maytag — that collar sits low, roughly 3 to 6 inches above the floor and slightly left or right of center. If your duct exits straight through the exterior wall behind the machine, the cleanest install puts the wall thimble at the same elevation, centered about 5 inches up. A short straight shot with one adjustable elbow beats any taller configuration for airflow.
The picture changes when the duct has to travel up the wall and out through the rim joist, an attic run, or a second-story chase. For an upward run, plan the rough-in opening between 30 and 42 inches above the floor — high enough that a rigid periscope offset can bridge from the low dryer collar up to the wall fitting, but still low enough to hide behind the control panel of a standard 38- to 43-inch-tall machine. Frame the opening between studs, and keep it within about 12 inches horizontally of where the dryer collar will land so the offset does not have to snake sideways. On pedestal installations, add the pedestal height, typically 13 to 16 inches, to every measurement; a collar that sat at 5 inches now sits at 18 to 21 inches.
Measure the actual appliance before you cut drywall. Spec sheets list the exhaust location on the back panel drawing, and the difference between brands can be 4 inches — enough to turn a straight periscope into an awkward double offset that chokes airflow.
Recessed Dryer Boxes and Periscope Ducts
The single best upgrade for a tight laundry room is a recessed dryer box, a 22-gauge or plastic receptacle set into the stud bay so the transition hose folds into the wall instead of behind the machine. The Dryerbox Model 425 (about $30 to $45) is sized for upward duct runs in 2×4 walls and is designed to mount with its base 5 to 8 inches off the floor for standard dryers, or raised to match a pedestal. The Model 4D handles downward runs into a basement or crawlspace. With the box installed, the dryer slides back to within roughly 4 inches of the finished wall — you gain real floor space and eliminate the crushed-hose problem that causes most lint fires.
Where a full recessed box is overkill, an aluminum periscope (telescoping) duct such as the Whirlpool 4396037 or a Dundas Jafine TD48P (about $15 to $30) does the job. These flat rectangular ducts adjust from roughly 27 to 48 inches, connecting a low dryer collar to a higher wall inlet while keeping the appliance nearly flush to the wall. Two rules apply: keep the periscope vertical rather than laid over at a hard diagonal, and count it as the equivalent of two elbows when you total up your duct length allowance.
Exterior Termination Height Above Grade
Outside, the 12-inch minimum above finished grade is the floor, not the target. In practice, most installers set the hood 18 to 24 inches above grade even in mild climates, for three reasons. First, mulch and soil levels creep up over the years; a hood that started at 12 inches can end up at 8. Second, splash-back from roof runoff and sprinklers corrodes low dampers and mats the lint on the flapper. Third, a bit of extra height keeps the opening above the mud zone where rodents probe for entry points.
Height also interacts with the 3-foot clearance rule. Coming out of a rim joist at 16 to 20 inches above grade often puts the hood directly below a first-floor window; measure the 3 feet from the edge of the hood to the edge of the window frame, in any direction, before you drill the 4.25-inch hole. If you cannot get the clearance low, sometimes the answer is to go slightly lower rather than higher, exiting through the band joist below the window line.
Snow Country Changes the Math
In snow-belt states the code minimum will get you a blocked vent by mid-January. A dryer termination buried in snow does two dangerous things: it forces moist exhaust back through the damper into the duct, where it condenses and cements lint into a plug, and it can push combustion byproducts from a gas dryer back toward the living space. The working rule from HVAC contractors in Minnesota, upstate New York, and the mountain West is to terminate at least 12 inches above the historical snow line, which usually means 24 to 48 inches above grade. If the drift zone off a roof valley lands near the vent, go higher still or relocate the exit.
Whatever height you choose, resist the temptation to vent through the roof in cold climates just to escape the snow. Roof terminations ice over at the damper, are miserable to clean, and add vertical run that most dryers cannot push. A gable wall exit at 3 to 4 feet above grade, with a heated-garage-side cleanout if possible, is the durable answer.
Clearance and Duct-Length Rules That Ride Along
Height decisions live inside a bigger envelope of dryer-duct rules, and inspectors check them together. Total developed length of the 4-inch smooth-metal duct is capped at 35 feet under IRC M1502.4.5.1 unless the dryer manufacturer allows more; deduct 5 feet for every 90-degree elbow and 2.5 feet for each 45. A rough-in placed at 36 inches instead of 6 inches adds vertical run and usually two elbows, so a taller interior height can quietly eat 12 feet of your allowance. Use 28-gauge rigid galvanized or aluminum duct, seam up, joints taped with UL-181 foil tape — never screws, which snag lint, and never flexible foil duct inside walls.
At the wall, support the duct within 12 inches of the hood and every 4 feet of run. Choose a louvered or angled-collar hood such as the Lambro 143WS or a Heartland 21000 dryer vent closure ($12 to $35); skip any cap with a built-in screen, which is a code violation for dryer exhaust because it traps lint.
Common Height Mistakes to Avoid
The errors below account for most callbacks on laundry rooms, and every one traces back to a height decision made without measuring:
- Roughing in the wall duct at counter height, 36 inches or more, when the duct exits straight back — creating two unnecessary elbows and a lint trap behind the machine.
- Setting the exterior hood at exactly 12 inches over a bed that will be mulched, then losing the clearance within two seasons.
- Ignoring pedestal or stacked-unit heights; a stacked washer-dryer combo can put the exhaust collar 40-plus inches up, flipping the whole layout.
- Terminating under a deck at a legal height above grade but with no open airflow — exhaust must reach open air, not a joist cavity.
- Matching the hood height to a neighbor’s house instead of your own grade, which slopes; measure at the vent location.
Dialing In the Right Numbers for Your Install
Work the problem from the machine outward. Pull the spec sheet, note the collar height, and decide whether the duct exits straight back, up, or down. Straight-back runs get a rough-in centered about 5 inches above the finished floor; upward runs get a periscope or Dryerbox with the wall opening at 30 to 42 inches. Outside, hold a hard minimum of 12 inches above grade, stretch it to 18 to 24 inches as standard practice, and clear the local snow line by a foot in cold climates, all while keeping 3 feet from every operable opening. Confirm the total developed length still clears 35 feet after elbows. Get those numbers on paper before the hole saw comes out, and the correct dryer vent height from floor stops being a judgment call and becomes a 20-minute layout task — one that pays you back every time the lint screen comes out barely loaded because the duct behind it actually breathes.
