That machine and the humble utility knife are the two tools people mean when they say drywall cutter, and between them they handle 95% of the cuts on a drywall job. Here’s how each one works, which bits and blades actually matter, and where the boundaries are — because there are still cuts that belong to a saw instead.
The Utility Knife: The Original Drywall Cutter
Score-and-snap is the fundamental drywall cut, and it never touches a power cord. Score the face paper along a straightedge or T-square with a sharp utility blade — one confident pass about 1/8 inch deep, just through the paper and into the gypsum. Snap the board away from the cut; the core breaks clean along the score. Fold the waste back and slice the back paper to finish.
