  4. Set the puller. Thread the post back until the jaws can hook behind the handle’s lowest solid point — the bell or hub base, never a thin decorative skirt. Center the post tip in the screw hole so it bears on the end of the valve stem. Many pullers include a small cap or the original handle screw partially reinstalled to give the post a flat target and protect internal cartridge threads; use it, especially on Moen cartridges where the stem screw hole is soft brass.
  5. Turn, steadily. Crank the T-handle clockwise with smooth hand force. You’ll feel firm resistance, then a crack as the scale bond breaks, then easy turning as the handle slides off. Keep the jaws square — if the tool tilts, back off, reseat, and continue. Never extend the T-handle with a pipe; if hand force isn’t moving it, the problem is setup or soak time, not torque.
