Pull a flickering tube out of a kitchen fixture and you face a wall of choices at the hardware store — T8, T12, F32, F40, cool white, daylight, electronic ballast, magnetic ballast. Florescent light bulbs have been the workhorse of garages, basements, and commercial kitchens for 70 years, but the lineup has fragmented as the industry transitions to LED. Knowing which tube fits your fixture, which ballast you have, and whether to retrofit to LED saves money and prevents the most common mistake: buying a tube that physically fits but never lights up.
Reading the Code on the Tube
Every fluorescent tube has an alphanumeric code etched near the end. The letters and numbers tell you exactly what you have.
- F: fluorescent (always there).
- 32 or 40: wattage (32W or 40W are most common).
- T8 or T12: tube diameter in eighths of an inch. T8 is 1 inch; T12 is 1-1/2 inches.
- /CW, /WW, /D: color — cool white (4100K), warm white (3000K), daylight (5000-6500K).
- /RS, /HO, /VHO: rapid start, high output, very high output.
An “F32T8/CW” tube is a 32-watt, 1-inch diameter, cool-white rapid-start tube. That label is the only spec you need to take to the store for a replacement.
T8 vs T12: The Critical Difference
This is where 90% of mismatches happen. T8 and T12 tubes look interchangeable to most people but require different ballasts. The ballast is the device inside the fixture that regulates current.
T12 (1-1/2 inch diameter) tubes mostly use magnetic ballasts and were the standard before 1990. They are inefficient, hum audibly, and were phased out for new construction in 2012 under DOE energy standards.
T8 (1 inch diameter) tubes use electronic ballasts, run cooler, last longer, and produce 25-30% more lumens per watt. If your fixture has T12 tubes, you can usually replace the ballast with an electronic T8 ballast and switch to T8 tubes. Many fixtures from the late 1990s onward came pre-wired for both.
Mismatching the tube to the ballast results in tubes that flicker, blink, or never light at all. The tube is not defective; the wrong ballast is the problem.
How to Identify Your Ballast
Before replacing tubes, check the fixture’s ballast label. Remove the diffuser and find the small rectangular box wired to the lamp holders. The label tells you:
- Whether it is electronic or magnetic.
- What tube types it accepts (T8, T12, or both).
- Number of tubes per ballast (1, 2, or 4).
- The ballast factor (BF) — how much light the tube produces relative to standard.
If the ballast is dated before 1995 and feels warm or buzzes audibly, replace it before buying new tubes. A new electronic ballast costs $20-$40 and takes 20 minutes to install with the breaker off.
Color Temperature: Pick the Right One
Fluorescent tubes come in a narrower color range than LED, but the choice still matters.
2700K-3000K (warm white): incandescent-like, flattering for skin tones, typical for residential fixtures.
3500K-4100K (cool white): standard for offices, garages, and workshops. Slightly bluish; reduces eye strain during task work.
5000K-6500K (daylight): closest to natural daylight. Best for color-accurate work — matching paint, sewing, drafting. Reads as harsh in living spaces.
Mixing color temperatures within a single room or even a single fixture creates a noticeable patchwork of warm and cool light. Buy all tubes for one space at the same time, same brand, same color code.
LED Retrofit Options
Most fluorescent tubes can be replaced with LED tubes that look identical and slot into the same lamp holders. Three retrofit paths exist, and each has trade-offs.
Type A (ballast-compatible): the LED tube uses the existing ballast. Easiest install — pull out the fluorescent tube, slide in the LED. The catch: when the ballast eventually fails (3-7 more years), you replace the ballast or rewire the fixture.
Type B (ballast-bypass): the LED tube wires directly to line voltage. Remove and bypass the ballast. More work upfront (15-30 minutes per fixture, breaker off) but no future ballast failures. Most cost-effective long-term.
Type C (external driver): a dedicated LED driver replaces the ballast. Highest light quality, dimming compatibility. Most expensive ($35-$60 per fixture conversion). Used in commercial retrofits.
For homeowners doing a garage or basement, Type B is the standard recommendation. Tubes run $5-$10 each at Costco or Home Depot, last 50,000 hours, and use 40-50% less power than the fluorescents they replace.
Common Length and Wattage Combinations
Most residential florescent light bulbs come in standard lengths. Match the length first, then specify everything else.
- 2 feet (24 inches), F17T8 or F20T12: small under-cabinet fixtures, closet lights.
- 3 feet (36 inches), F25T8 or F30T12: bathroom vanities, smaller workbench lights.
- 4 feet (48 inches), F32T8 or F40T12: the workhorse size. Garages, basements, kitchens, commercial drop-ceilings.
- 5 feet (60 inches), F40T8: rare in residential, common in old commercial.
- 8 feet (96 inches), F96T8 or F96T12: warehouses, large commercial spaces.
If your fixture takes 4-foot tubes (the most common case), every hardware store carries replacements in stock for under $5 per tube.
Disposal: Fluorescents Contain Mercury
This is the rule most homeowners ignore. Every fluorescent tube contains a small amount of mercury vapor — typically 3-5 milligrams per tube. Tossing tubes in household trash is illegal in many states and creates landfill contamination.
Home Depot, Lowe’s, and IKEA all run free fluorescent tube recycling at customer service desks. Your municipal hazardous waste day also accepts them. Wrap broken tubes in newspaper and seal in a plastic bag before transport.
If a tube breaks indoors, ventilate the room for 15 minutes, then sweep up fragments with stiff cardboard (never a vacuum, which atomizes mercury). Place fragments in a sealed glass jar and dispose of as hazardous waste.
Troubleshooting Common Problems
A few symptoms point to specific causes.
Flickering or strobing: failing ballast (most common) or end-of-life tube. Replace the tube first; if it persists, replace the ballast.
Dark ends on the tube: normal aging. Tube is at 70% of life remaining. Replace within 6 months.
Tube buzzes loudly: magnetic ballast on its way out. Replace ballast or upgrade to electronic.
Tube takes 30+ seconds to fully brighten: normal cold-start behavior in temperatures below 50°F. If consistent at room temperature, the ballast is mismatched or failing.
Tube does not light at all: check tombstones (lamp holders) for corrosion, ballast wires for breaks, and tube pins for bent or broken contacts. Confirm tube and ballast are matched type before assuming the tube is bad.
When to Replace the Whole Fixture
If the fixture is over 20 years old, the ballast has failed once already, and the diffuser is yellowed or cracked, replace the entire unit instead of the ballast. New 4-foot LED shop lights run $25-$50, plug into a standard outlet, and have no ballast to fail. The math nearly always favors replacement over repair when the fixture is past its second decade.
