Fluorescent Light Bulb Replacement: Complete Guide for Homeowners

A flickering shop light or buzzing kitchen fixture is usually a tube nearing end of life, but sometimes the real culprit is the ballast hiding inside the housing. Understanding fluorescent light bulb replacement means knowing which tube type you have, whether the ballast is still healthy, and whether a direct LED swap is actually a better long-term move than another fluorescent. This guide walks through the diagnosis, the swap, and the safe disposal of the old tubes.

Most replacements take less than 10 minutes and cost between $4 and $18 per tube. The savings of switching to LED tubes pay back in 18 to 30 months on a fixture that runs 8 hours a day.

Identify Your Tube Type

Look at the end of the existing tube. The diameter and pin pattern tell you exactly what to buy.

  • T12: 1-1/2 inch diameter, two pins, older shop lights and pre-2010 fixtures
  • T8: 1 inch diameter, two pins, the modern standard for most kitchens and garages
  • T5: 5/8 inch diameter, two pins, common in under-cabinet and high-output fixtures
  • Compact fluorescent (CFL): plug-in base with 2 or 4 pins for can lights and sconces

Tube length matters too. The most common residential lengths are 24 inches (17W to 20W), 48 inches (28W to 32W), and 96 inches (54W to 75W). Measure the existing tube end-to-end including the pins before driving to the store.

Diagnose Whether It Is the Tube or the Ballast

A tube at end of life shows blackening at one or both ends, takes longer to start (especially in cold garages), or flickers steadily. Replacing the tube usually fixes it.

A failing ballast causes humming louder than usual, total fixture failure (tubes not lighting at all), or a burning smell. Test by swapping a known-good tube in. If the new tube also fails to start, the ballast is the problem. Ballast replacements run $20 to $45 for residential fixtures and take 20 to 30 minutes.

Replacing a Standard Two-Pin Tube

Turn off the wall switch first. For extra safety, flip the breaker; some ballasts hold a residual charge for a few seconds. Let the tube cool for at least 5 minutes if it has been running.

Grip the tube firmly near each end and rotate it a quarter turn (90 degrees). The pins will align with the slot in the tombstone (the white plastic socket holders) and the tube will drop out. Lift it down carefully; even cold tubes can shatter if dropped.

Installing the New Tube

Align the pins with the tombstone slots vertically. Push the tube up into both sockets simultaneously, then rotate a quarter turn. You should feel a small detent click as the pins lock into the contact position.

Flip the breaker back on and test the wall switch. A new tube may take 15 to 30 seconds to reach full brightness, longer in temperatures below 50 degrees F. If it does not light at all, double-check the rotation; an under-rotated pin makes incomplete contact and the tube will not strike.

LED Tube Retrofits

LED tubes designed for fluorescent fixtures fall into three categories that determine how complicated the swap will be.

  • Type A (plug and play): works with existing ballast, simplest swap, $8-$15 per tube
  • Type B (ballast bypass): requires rewiring to bypass the ballast, $6-$12 per tube
  • Type C (external driver): commercial-focused, replaces ballast with LED driver

For residential use, Type A is the simplest if your ballast is in good condition. Type B is cheaper long-term because you eliminate the ballast as a failure point entirely. Read the LED tube spec sheet; not all ballasts are compatible with all Type A tubes.

Why CFLs Are a Different Beast

Compact fluorescent bulbs in can lights or table lamps follow different replacement rules. Most CFLs use a screw base (E26 medium base) and unscrew like incandescent bulbs. Pin-base CFLs found in dedicated fixtures pull straight out after a quarter turn.

Modern LED retrofits have largely replaced CFLs in residential settings because LED bulbs reach full brightness instantly and contain no mercury. A 100-watt-equivalent LED bulb costs $4 to $9 and lasts 10 to 15 years in typical use.

Safe Disposal of Old Fluorescents

Every fluorescent tube contains 3 to 5 milligrams of mercury. Tossing them in household trash is illegal in most states and a measurable environmental hazard. Take used tubes to Home Depot, Lowes, or a county hazardous waste drop-off.

Transport tubes in their original packaging if possible. If the tube broke, ventilate the area for 15 minutes, scoop fragments with stiff paper (not a vacuum, which spreads the mercury), seal everything in a glass jar with a lid, and label it for hazardous waste pickup.

When to Replace the Entire Fixture

If your ballast has failed twice, the fixture is more than 15 years old, or you want to switch to LEDs anyway, the math often favors a full replacement. New LED shop lights with integrated diodes (no replaceable bulbs) cost $35 to $90 and consume 30 to 50 watts compared to 80 to 96 watts for a two-tube T8 fixture.

The energy savings on a fixture running 6 hours a day come to roughly $15 a year. Add the avoided tube and ballast replacements over a 50,000-hour LED life and the payback usually lands inside three years. Fluorescent light bulb replacement still makes sense for newer fixtures with healthy ballasts; for tired fixtures, just upgrade the whole unit and move on.
