Choosing grout feels simple until you’re standing in the tile aisle staring at sanded, unsanded, and epoxy options with no idea which fits your joints. A good grout chart takes the guesswork out by matching joint width to the correct grout type and helping you estimate how much you’ll need. Get it wrong and you’ll either fight to pack grout into joints that are too narrow or watch it crack and slump out of joints that are too wide. This guide gives you the reference tables I use on every job.

Joint Width Determines Grout Type

The single most important decision is sanded versus unsanded, and joint width makes the call. Sanded grout contains fine sand that adds bulk and resists shrinkage in wider gaps. Unsanded grout is smooth and sticky, ideal for tight joints where sand would prevent proper packing. Here’s the working chart:

  • Joints under 1/8 inch: Use unsanded grout. Sand won’t fit and would leave voids.
  • Joints 1/8 to 1/2 inch: Use sanded grout for strength and shrink resistance.

  • Any width, high-moisture areas: Consider epoxy grout regardless of joint size.

Estimating quantity trips up most first-timers. Coverage depends on tile size, joint width, and joint depth, since larger tiles have fewer joints per square foot. As a rough guide for a standard 25-pound bag of cement grout with a 1/8-inch joint:

  • Small mosaic (1×1 in): covers about 30-40 sq ft
  • Subway (3×6 in): covers about 75-90 sq ft
  • Standard floor (12×12 in): covers about 175-200 sq ft
  • Large format (12×24 in): covers about 200-230 sq ft
  • Big square (24×24 in): covers about 250-300 sq ft

Wider joints eat grout fast. Double the joint width and you roughly double the grout consumed. Always buy 10-15 percent extra so you don’t run short mid-job and end up with a slightly mismatched second batch.

Reading a Manufacturer’s Coverage Formula

Bag labels print a coverage formula, and it’s worth understanding rather than guessing. The calculation multiplies tile length plus width, times joint width, times joint depth, then divides by the product of tile length times width. The result is grout volume per square foot, which the manufacturer converts to bags.

Grout color changes the entire look of a tile installation. A matching color makes the surface read as one seamless field, while a contrasting color highlights the pattern and geometry. Keep in mind that cement grout dries lighter than it looks wet, so always check a cured sample before committing to a whole room.

Beyond joint width, the tile material itself steers the choice. Glass, polished marble, and other easily scratched surfaces call for unsanded grout regardless of joint size, because the sand in sanded grout can abrade the delicate face. Rough natural stone like slate or tumbled travertine, on the other hand, pairs well with sanded grout and often benefits from a grout release applied first so the porous stone doesn’t stain.

For high-moisture and high-stain settings, shower floors, kitchen backsplashes behind a stove, mudroom entries, epoxy earns its premium price. It resists mildew and staining without sealing and won’t crack in areas that see standing water. The chart gives you the starting point; layering in the tile material and the room’s moisture level gets you to the right final answer.
