Growing Seeds Indoors: Complete Guide for Homeowners

Most failed seed-starting attempts trace back to one of three problems: not enough light, too much water, or starting too early. Growing seeds indoors successfully isn’t about owning a fancy greenhouse — it’s about giving seedlings the same six conditions a commercial grower does, just at a hobby scale. After 12 seasons of starting tomatoes, peppers, brassicas, herbs, and flowers under shop lights in an unheated basement, the workflow below produces stocky, transplant-ready seedlings 80% of the time without expensive equipment.

The Six Conditions Seeds Need

Plants need light, water, air circulation, the right temperature for germination, the right temperature for growth, and proper nutrients at the right time. Skip one of those six and your seedlings either fail to germinate, become “leggy” and weak, or die during transplant.

The most overlooked condition is air circulation. Stagnant air promotes damping-off — a fungal disease that kills seedlings overnight at the soil line. A small clip-on fan running 8 hours a day on the lowest setting prevents 90% of damping-off cases.

Lighting — Where Most Beginners Lose

Your sunny south-facing window is not enough. A January sunbeam delivers about 1,000 to 2,000 lux at the windowsill. Tomato seedlings need 8,000 to 12,000 lux to grow stocky. The difference is why windowsill seedlings stretch tall and pale while shop-light seedlings stay short and dark green.

Watering Without Killing Seedlings

Overwatering kills more indoor seedlings than any other cause. The fix is watering from the bottom and only when the surface is dry to the touch.

Pour water into the bottom tray (the solid plastic tray, not the cell tray) to a depth of about 1/4 inch. The cells wick water up through capillary action over 30 to 60 minutes. Drain any standing water after an hour. This method delivers water directly to the roots without wetting the foliage or soil surface — the same conditions that cause damping-off.

Check moisture daily. The top of the soil should feel barely damp when seeds are germinating, then dry to the touch between waterings once true leaves appear.

Timing for Common Crops

Count back from your last frost date. Most US zones have a known last frost date — check the National Weather Service local averages. Then count back the recommended weeks for each crop.

Common Problems and Fixes

Leggy seedlings: more light, lower temperature, and a fan. Damping-off: better air circulation, less surface watering, sterile mix. Yellowing leaves: nutrient deficiency, start fertilizing. Slow germination: heat mat or warmer location. Mold on soil surface: too damp, run a fan, water from below.
