Drywall is heavier than people think, and miscalculating the weight of a load is how trucks blow tires, drywall lifts collapse, and DIYers hurt their backs on a basement project. How much does drywall weigh depends on three variables: thickness, sheet size, and type (standard, lightweight, moisture-resistant, or fire-rated). A typical 4×8 sheet of half-inch standard drywall comes in at 51 pounds, but a 4×12 sheet of 5/8 inch Type X fire-rated can hit 109 pounds. Knowing the exact figures matters when you are sizing a header, renting a truck, or deciding whether to lift a sheet alone.
Standard Drywall Weight by Size
Standard gypsum drywall, sometimes called whiteboard, is the most common product and the baseline for weight comparisons. The numbers below come from manufacturer spec sheets (USG Sheetrock, CertainTeed ProRoc, National Gypsum Gold Bond) and are accurate within a pound or two.
- 1/4 inch, 4×8 sheet: 38 pounds
- 3/8 inch, 4×8 sheet: 44 pounds
- 1/2 inch, 4×8 sheet: 51 pounds
- 1/2 inch, 4×10 sheet: 64 pounds

The math: standard drywall weighs roughly 1.6 pounds per square foot for half-inch and 2.3 pounds per square foot for 5/8 inch. Multiply by the sheet area to estimate any size.
Lightweight Drywall
USG Sheetrock UltraLight and CertainTeed Easi-Lite cut weight by about 25 to 30 percent compared to standard. The gypsum core is foamed during manufacturing, creating tiny air pockets that reduce density without sacrificing screw-holding strength.

- 1/2 inch UltraLight, 4×12 sheet: 54 pounds
The trade-off is cost (about 15 percent higher per sheet) and slightly less impact resistance. For ceiling work, where you are holding a sheet over your head against the joists, lightweight is worth every penny. For walls, standard is fine.
Moisture-Resistant (Green Board) Weight
Green board has a wax-treated paper face and a slightly denser core to resist mold and humidity in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements. It runs about 5 percent heavier than standard drywall.

Cement board (Durock, HardieBacker) is in a different league, around 80 to 96 pounds for a 1/2 inch 3×5 sheet, and is used behind tile in showers, not as a drywall replacement.
Fire-Rated Type X and Type C
Type X drywall has glass fibers and additives in the core that resist burn-through for 1 hour at 5/8 inch thickness. It is required by code on garage walls adjoining living space, in townhouse party walls, and around mechanical rooms. Type C is even more fire-resistant and used in commercial assemblies.

- 5/8 inch Type X, 4×12 sheet: 110 pounds
- 1/2 inch Type X (less common), 4×8 sheet: 56 pounds
The added density makes Type X the heaviest residential drywall by a small margin. Two people lifting a 4×12 Type X sheet are each handling 55 pounds at awkward angles. Use a panel hoist for ceilings.
Soundproofing and Specialty Drywall
Products like QuietRock, SilentFX, and PABCO Quiet have laminated layers and viscoelastic damping compounds. They are dramatically heavier.

One sheet weighs about as much as two standard sheets. Plan accordingly when ordering, the pallet-handling cost alone is significant.
Truck Bed and Lift Capacity
A typical half-ton pickup like a Ford F-150 has a 1,500 to 2,000 pound payload capacity. That is roughly 30 sheets of 1/2 inch drywall on the safe side, or 25 sheets if you also have tools and yourself in the cab. Spread the weight across the bed, do not stack 30 sheets at the tailgate. Strap them down with two ratchet straps minimum.
Drywall lifts (panel jacks) are usually rated 150 to 200 pounds, plenty for a single sheet but not for stacking sheets on the lift platform. Put one sheet up, fasten it, take it down, repeat.
Floor Load and Storage
If you stack 50 sheets of 5/8 inch in a single area of your basement floor, you are putting 3,500 to 5,000 pounds on roughly 32 square feet, or about 110 to 155 pounds per square foot. Most residential floors are designed for 40 pounds per square foot live load. Spread stacks across multiple joist bays and never stack against an exterior wall in a finished basement, the joist span there is least supported.
Disposal Weight
When you demo old drywall, a typical 100 sq ft of removed wall produces roughly 160 pounds of debris (about 1.6 lbs/sq ft, same as new but with nails and old screws mixed in). A 20-yard dumpster can hold around 4 tons of drywall debris before you hit the weight cap, though local dump fees often charge by ton over the included weight. Header and Framing Considerations
When you hang a long horizontal run of 5/8 inch drywall on a ceiling, the dead load on the framing is real. A 12×12 foot ceiling sheathed with 5/8 inch Type X carries roughly 330 pounds of drywall hanging from the joists. Most residential ceiling joists (2×6 or 2×8 at 16 inches on center) handle this without issue, but in retrofit applications where you are adding a second layer of drywall for soundproofing, check the joist span tables. Adding 50 percent more weight to a marginal span can cause sag over 5 to 10 years.
For walls, the framing carries the load vertically and stud spacing matters less for weight than for fastener pull-out. Use 1-1/4 inch coarse-thread drywall screws every 12 inches on ceilings, every 16 inches on walls. Underestimating drywall weight is one of the most common DIY framing failures.
