Caked-on grease and burnt cheese on oven racks resists scrubbing for hours in a kitchen sink. The bathtub gives you the surface area to fully submerge a rack and lets long dwell times do the work for you. Knowing how to clean oven racks in bathtub the right way matters because the wrong cleaners can etch acrylic tubs, stain enamel, or strip caulk seams. Four methods work well: the dryer sheet trick, dish soap and hot water, baking soda paste, and ammonia. Each suits different tub finishes and different levels of grease. Protect the Tub Before You Start
Set down old bath towels along the bottom of the tub before laying racks in. This prevents metal-on-tub scratching, which is the most common bathroom damage from this technique. A thick king-size cotton bath sheet works perfectly; two old beach towels overlapped are equally good.
Acrylic and fiberglass tubs are more sensitive than porcelain or cast iron enamel. Skip ammonia and avoid hot water above 130 degrees Fahrenheit on acrylic tubs to prevent gloss damage. For porcelain enamel and cast iron, all four methods work safely with normal protection.
Method 1: Dryer Sheet Soak
The internet’s favorite hack actually works. Fill the tub with the hottest water from the tap (around 120 degrees), add 1/2 cup of Dawn or any dish soap, and float 4 to 6 used dryer sheets in the water. The fabric softener in the sheets contains cationic surfactants that break the bond between grease and metal.

Method 2: Dawn and Hot Water
For lightly soiled racks, plain Dawn Ultra and hot water clean nearly as well as the dryer sheet method. Fill the tub with hot water to fully submerge the racks. Add 1 cup of Dawn Ultra dish soap. Stir to distribute.
Soak for 4 to 8 hours. Dawn’s grease-cutting enzymes break down baked-on food residue without needing any abrasive scrubbing. After soaking, scrub stubborn spots with a stiff-bristled nylon brush. Let the paste sit 30 minutes. Then transfer the racks to the bathtub on towels and pour 2 cups of white vinegar over them. The acid-base reaction fizzes for several minutes, lifting carbon residue. Once the foaming stops, fill the tub with hot water and let soak 6 to 12 hours.
Scrub residual buildup with a non-scratch scouring pad like a Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty. Rinse and dry. This method works well even on racks that have not been cleaned in years.
Method 4: Ammonia Bag Method
For the worst racks — black, crusted, and resistant to other methods — ammonia is the heavy artillery. Place each rack in a heavy-duty 39-gallon contractor bag. Pour 1 cup of clear ammonia into each bag. Seal tight with a twist tie.
Leave the bagged racks in the bathtub (or better, outside in a garage or driveway) for 12 to 24 hours. Ammonia vapor — not the liquid itself — breaks down the carbonized residue. The bag contains the smell.
Open the bag outdoors. Rinse the racks thoroughly with a hose or shower spray. Carbonized buildup wipes off with light pressure. Critical safety note: never mix ammonia with bleach or any chlorine product. The reaction produces chloramine gas, which causes serious respiratory injury.
Stubborn Spots and Rust
Black carbon that survives soaking responds to Bar Keepers Friend cleanser ($3 a can) and a damp Scotch-Brite pad. Sprinkle, scrub gently, and rinse. Avoid steel wool — it scratches chrome plating and the abrasive fragments leave permanent marks.
Rust spots indicate the chrome plating has worn through. Treat the rust with Naval Jelly or CLR Rust Remover, then dry thoroughly. For glass cooktop grids, dishwasher-safe components, and chrome trim with delicate finishes, the dishwasher or sink works better.
