Turn Off Power and Water First
Flip the breaker for the dishwasher circuit at the main panel. Verify with a non-contact voltage tester at the junction box before touching wires. Shut off the dishwasher water supply at the angle stop under the sink — usually a separate valve from the cold water supply to the faucet.

Step 1: Position and Level the Dishwasher
Slide the dishwasher into the cabinet opening, leaving enough room behind to make connections. Standard openings are 24 inches wide by 24 inches deep by 34.5 inches tall. Use the leveling feet at the front to set the unit dead level — front to back and side to side. An off-level dishwasher leaks at the door.
Set the front feet so the door clears the cabinet face by 1/16 inch when closed. Tighten the locknuts on each foot to prevent vibration loosening.
Step 2: Connect the Water Supply
The brass elbow fitting (sometimes called a 90 degree dishwasher ell) threads into the water inlet valve at the front bottom of the unit. Wrap the threads with three wraps of Teflon tape going clockwise, then thread on hand-tight plus a quarter turn with a wrench. Over-tightening cracks the brass valve.
Connect the braided stainless supply line between the elbow and the angle stop under the sink. Hand-tighten the compression nuts, then snug with a wrench — about 1/8 turn past hand-tight. Check for leaks once you turn the water back on.
Step 3: Connect the Drain Line
The drain hose runs from the dishwasher pump to either the garbage disposal inlet, a dedicated dishwasher tailpiece on the sink trap, or an air gap on the countertop.
For a garbage disposal connection, knock out the plug inside the disposal’s dishwasher inlet using a hammer and screwdriver — fish out the plastic plug or it will block the drain. Slip the drain hose onto the inlet and secure with a hose clamp.
Run the hose with a high loop — secure it to the underside of the countertop at maximum height before dropping to the disposal or tailpiece. The high loop prevents dirty sink water from siphoning back into the dishwasher. Some jurisdictions (California, Minnesota, others) require an air gap fitting installed through the countertop instead of a high loop.
Step 4: Make Electrical Connections
Dishwashers run on a dedicated 15 or 20 amp 120V circuit. Hardwired connections use a junction box at the front kick plate; plug-in models use a standard outlet at the back of the cabinet.
- Remove the kick plate to access the junction box
- Feed the home circuit cable through the strain-relief clamp
- Connect black to black, white to white, ground to ground using yellow wire nuts (rated for 12-14 gauge)
- Tuck wires neatly into the box and replace the cover
- Restore power at the breaker
If your existing setup uses a cord and plug, just plug it in. Code in most areas now allows either method, but the original installation type is usually the easiest to maintain.
Step 5: Secure the Dishwasher
Most units come with mounting brackets that screw into the underside of the countertop or the side cabinets. Use the included screws (typically 3/4 inch) — longer screws can puncture the countertop surface. For granite or quartz, side-mount brackets attach to the cabinets, since you cannot screw into stone.
Verify the door swings freely without hitting the kickplate or adjacent cabinets.
Step 6: Test the Installation
Turn on the water supply and inspect every connection for leaks — under the sink, at the inlet valve, at the disposal connection. Run an empty cycle and observe through the door window if equipped, or check after 5 minutes of operation.
Check that water fills, drains completely, and the door seals. A first cycle should produce no error codes. If the dishwasher beeps with water leak warnings, shut it off and check connections.
