How to Lay Carpet on Concrete: Step-by-Step Guide

Concrete is brutal on carpet that was installed without the right prep. If you skip the moisture test, the pad delaminates within two winters and you can smell the mildew before you see the staining. Knowing how to lay carpet on concrete properly means treating the slab like the unique substrate it is, not like a plywood subfloor with extra weight.

Done right, a basement carpet install on a 200 square foot slab takes one weekend and runs $450 to $900 in materials. Most of the budget goes into a moisture-resistant pad and the carpet itself.

Test the Slab for Moisture First

Skip this step and nothing else matters. Tape a 24-inch by 24-inch square of clear plastic sheeting to the slab with duct tape on all four edges. Leave it for 72 hours. If condensation forms under the plastic or the concrete darkens, you have vapor transmission that will destroy any carpet system.

For a more accurate reading, rent a calcium chloride test kit for about $15. Anything over 3 pounds per 1,000 square feet per 24 hours requires a moisture barrier or an epoxy sealer before you proceed.

Clean and Prep the Concrete

Sweep, then vacuum with a shop vac. Scrape paint splatters, dried drywall mud, and old adhesive ridges with a 4-inch floor scraper. Any bump higher than 1/8 inch will telegraph through the carpet within a month.

Fill cracks wider than 1/16 inch with a polymer-modified patching compound like Henry 547 or Mapei Planipatch. Let it cure overnight. Etch the slab with muriatic acid only if you plan to glue down directly; for stretch-in installs, a thorough vacuum is enough.

Install Tack Strips Around the Perimeter

Use concrete-specific tack strips with masonry nails pre-embedded, not the wood-floor version. Cut strips to length with tin snips and position them with the pins angled toward the wall. Leave a gap equal to two-thirds of the carpet thickness (typically 3/8 inch) between the strip and the baseboard.

Drive each masonry nail with a 16-ounce hammer. If a nail bends, pull it and try a fresh hole 1/2 inch away. For especially dense slabs, predrill with a 1/8-inch masonry bit. Add construction adhesive to the underside of each strip for extra holding power on smooth slabs.

Roll Out the Vapor Barrier and Pad

Lay a 6-mil polyethylene vapor barrier over the entire slab, overlapping seams by 6 inches and taping them with 2-inch poly tape. Run the barrier 4 inches up the wall and trim later.

On top of the barrier, install a moisture-resistant rebond pad rated at 8 pounds per cubic foot or higher. Cheaper 4-pound pads compress within a year on concrete. Cut the pad to fit snugly inside the tack strips and seam pieces together with pad tape. Staples will not hold in concrete, so the tape is doing all the work.

Cut and Position the Carpet

Acclimate the carpet in the room for at least 24 hours at 65 to 95 degrees F. Roll it out with the pile direction running the same way throughout the room. For seams, plan to place them perpendicular to the main light source so they show less.

Trim the carpet to leave 3 inches of overage on every wall. You will trim the final fit after stretching. For seams, use a seaming iron and 30-inch seam tape, pressing the iron at 250 to 300 degrees F and moving in 12-inch increments.

Stretch the Carpet Into Place

Start in one corner and hook the carpet onto the tack strips. Use a knee kicker to attach the carpet along the starting wall, then move to the opposite wall with a power stretcher. A rented power stretcher runs about $25 a day at Home Depot and pays for itself by preventing the lumps and ripples that knee-only installs always develop.

Stretch in 15-degree increments around the room. Trim excess carpet with a wall trimmer set to your carpet thickness, then tuck the cut edge into the gap behind the tack strip with a stair tool. Work the entire perimeter before declaring the job finished.

Finish the Transitions and Trim

At doorways, install a metal Z-bar or carpet-to-tile transition. Most slabs have a height differential to adjacent rooms; pick a transition profile that bridges the gap without creating a trip hazard.

Reinstall baseboards or quarter round to cover the perimeter gap. Vacuum the carpet with a beater bar vacuum to lift the pile and remove install debris. Keep traffic light for the first 48 hours so the stretched fibers settle into the tack strips.

Long-Term Care on Concrete Substrates

Run a dehumidifier in the room during summer months if relative humidity climbs above 60 percent. Carpet on concrete is more vulnerable to mold because the slab stays cooler than the room air, creating a condensation point at the pad interface.

Spot-clean spills within 10 minutes and avoid steam cleaning for the first six months while the pad finishes off-gassing. With proper prep and quality materials, a stretch-in carpet on concrete lasts 10 to 15 years before the pad needs replacement.

Vacuum twice a week with a beater-bar brush set to the highest pile setting. Aggressive low settings tear at the carpet backing and accelerate wear in traffic lanes. Move furniture every six months by a few inches to redistribute compression patterns.

Watch for telltale warning signs of moisture intrusion: dark patches near the perimeter, a musty smell after a humid week, or visible mildew at the wall base. Catching moisture issues within the first 30 days lets you peel back a section, dry the slab, and patch the vapor barrier before the pad delaminates beyond repair.
