Cleaning season, a rescreening project, or just a screen rattling in the wind — sooner or later you need to know how to take window screen off from inside the house, because second-story screens should never be wrestled from a ladder. The good news: every residential screen system is designed for interior removal, and once you know how to take window screen off from inside for your particular attachment type, the job takes under a minute per window with no tools beyond, occasionally, a putty knife. The whole trick is identifying which of the four retention systems your windows use. I’ve serviced thousands of windows; here’s the field guide.

First: Open the Window and Find the Hardware
Screens on modern windows sit in an exterior channel and are held by one of four mechanisms, all operable from indoors once the sash is out of the way. Raise the lower sash fully on a double-hung (or slide a slider fully open) and inspect the screen frame’s inside edge. You’re looking for: flexible pull tabs (small plastic or metal tongues, usually at the bottom corners), plunger pins (spring-loaded round knobs you pull inward, usually at the top or sides), spring-loaded frame edges (no visible hardware — one side of the frame hides flat leaf springs), or lift-out tracks (nothing but a smooth frame that travels up and out, typical of sliders and storm windows). Ninety-five percent of screens fall into these four families, and the removal motion differs for each.
Method 1: Pull-Tab Screens (Most Vinyl Double-Hung Windows)
Vinyl replacement windows from the last 30 years — Andersen, Pella, Simonton, Milgard and everyone else — mostly use two flexible tabs at the bottom corners of the screen with spring tension along the top rail.
- Raise the interior sash completely to expose the screen.
- Grip both pull tabs and draw the bottom of the screen toward you (into the room) about an inch. The bottom edge clears its lip.
- Push the screen slightly upward to compress the top springs, then swing the bottom in and down. The whole frame drops free of the top channel and comes inside.
If the tabs have snapped off with age — extremely common on 15-year-old screens — slip a stiff putty knife between the frame and channel at a bottom corner and lever gently toward you while pushing up. Replacement stick-on and spline-mounted tabs cost about $3 for a bag of ten; install them before you put the screen back.
Method 2: Plunger-Pin Screens
Older aluminum windows and many wood-window screens use spring-loaded plunger pins — round knurled knobs, one at each side or top corner, that seat into holes in the window frame.
- Pull both plungers inward (toward the center of the screen) simultaneously. They retract about 3/8″ against spring pressure.
- While holding them retracted, tilt that edge of the screen into the room.
- Release, then lift the screen’s opposite edge out of its channel and bring the whole frame inside.
Seized plungers respond to a drop of silicone spray and a few working cycles. A plunger whose spring has died lets the screen rattle — replacements are $2–$4 each, and swapping one takes two minutes with the screen out.
Method 3: Spring-Side Screens (No Visible Hardware)
Some screens show no tabs and no pins — these are held purely by flat springs or bowed tension strips along one edge, usually the top or one side. Push the whole screen firmly toward the spring side (you’ll feel it compress about 1/4″), which frees the opposite edge from its shallow channel; swing that freed edge into the room and release. On reinstallation, springs go in first, compress, and the free edge snaps into its channel. If you can’t tell which side is sprung, press each edge in turn — the spring side gives; solid sides don’t.
Method 4: Lift-Out Screens on Sliders and Storm Windows
Horizontal sliding windows and triple-track storm units use the simplest system: gravity. Slide the moving sash fully open, grip the screen frame on both vertical edges (or by its finger rail if present), lift straight up about 1/2″ until the bottom clears its track, angle the bottom toward you, and lower it out. Sliding patio-door screens work identically but often have adjustable roller wheels at the bottom — if the screen won’t lift enough to clear, back off the roller adjustment screws at the bottom corners a few turns and it will.
Half-Screens, Full Screens, and Tilt-In Sashes
Double-hung windows come with either a half screen covering the lower opening or a full-height screen. Half screens remove exactly as above. Full screens on tilt-in vinyl windows sometimes require tilting the sashes first: flip the tilt latches on the top of the lower sash, tilt it in, then reach the screen hardware through the opening. A few builder-grade windows hold full screens with small metal clips screwed to the exterior — visible as little swiveling fingers at the frame edges — which you rotate out of the way through the open sash. And on casement (crank-out) windows the screen is on the inside: look for turn clips or spring latches around the interior frame; it removes into the room without touching the sash at all.
When the Screen Won’t Budge
- Paint or caulk sealing the frame: score the seam with a utility knife before prying, or you’ll bend the frame rail.
- Corroded aluminum channel: silicone spray along both channels, wait five minutes, work the screen side to side.
- Bowed frame binding in the track: push the long rails toward each other gently to straighten while lifting.
- Swollen wood surround: humid-season problem; remove in the morning when it’s coolest, and sand the channel lightly before reinstalling.
Never pry against the fiberglass mesh itself, and never force a corner — frames are thin roll-formed aluminum that kinks permanently at surprisingly low force. A kinked frame costs $20–$40 to replace; patience costs nothing.
While They’re Out: Cleaning and Storage That Pays Off
Since the screens are off anyway, ten minutes of care roughly doubles their service life. Lay each screen flat on the lawn or against the fence and wash both faces with a soft brush and a bucket of warm water with a squirt of dish soap — never a pressure washer, which blows fiberglass mesh right out of its spline at close range. Rinse with the garden hose on shower setting and stand them to drip-dry before reinstalling; a dry screen goes back in without streaking the glass you just cleaned. While each frame is in your hands, flex the corners gently and check for cracked corner keys (the plastic L-pieces inside the frame corners, $0.50 each to replace), probe the spline for brittleness, and press the mesh center — more than an inch of slack means it’s worth re-splining at $5 a window before it starts flapping.
For seasonal removal — common in snow country where storm panels swap in — store screens flat or on edge in a rack, never leaning in a stack where the bottom frames slowly bow under the pile’s weight. A garage-wall rack of two 1x2s spaced 12″ apart holds a whole house’s screens vertically like records in a crate, and the painter’s-tape location labels you applied at removal turn spring reinstallation into a 20-minute job instead of a jigsaw puzzle.
Reinstalling Without Drama
Reverse the removal for your type, with three checks: top or spring edge engages first, the frame sits fully inside its channel on all four sides (daylight at an edge means mosquitoes found the gap before you did), and the tabs, pins, or clips are actually seated — a screen resting loose in its track is the one the next thunderstorm throws into the yard. Label screens with painter’s tape as they come off (bedroom-left, kitchen-center); “identical” screens on the same house routinely vary by 1/4″ and they do not enjoy swapping positions. With the hardware identified and labeled, spring cleaning all the screens in an average house is a 30-minute job from entirely inside the glass.
