Most homeowners do not crack open an InSinkErator until it leaks, jams, or hums without grinding, and at that moment a parts diagram suddenly becomes the most useful piece of information in the kitchen. An InSinkErator parts diagram shows where the flywheel, the impellers, the splash baffle, and the wire harness live, which makes the difference between a five-minute fix and a $250 replacement disposal. The good news is that the internal architecture of an InSinkErator changes very little across the Badger, Evolution, and Pro Series lines, so once you can read one diagram you can read them all.

Why the Parts Diagram Matters
InSinkErator publishes exploded-view diagrams for every model in their service manuals, available free on the manufacturer’s website. Each part has a number you can search to order a replacement.
Without the diagram you risk ordering the wrong gasket, the wrong stopper, or the wrong dishwasher inlet. With the diagram, the entire repair becomes a parts-pull exercise: identify the bad component by number, order it, swap it in. Most repairs cost $5 to $40 in parts and 20 to 60 minutes of labor.
Major Component Groups
Every InSinkErator breaks down into seven functional groups. Knowing the names makes the diagram readable.
- Sink flange and mounting assembly: The chrome ring you see in the sink, the gaskets, and the three-bolt mounting clamp.
- Grinding chamber: The upper hopper where food enters and gets shredded.
- Shredder ring and impellers: The stationary ring and the swiveling lugs that grind the food.
- Flywheel and shaft: The disc that the impellers ride on, connected to the motor below.
- Motor housing: The lower section containing the induction motor.
- Discharge tube and gasket: The horizontal outlet that connects to the drain.
- Dishwasher inlet and wire access: The side knockout that accepts the dishwasher drain hose plus the electrical connection box.
Top Half of the Diagram: Mount and Chamber
The top of every InSinkErator diagram shows the sink flange dropping down through the sink hole, followed by a fiber gasket, a backup ring, a mounting ring, and a snap ring.
The three-bolt mount uses adjustable thumbscrews to clamp the assembly tight against the sink underside. The two most common leak points are the fiber gasket between the flange and sink (caused by plumber’s putty drying out over years) and the snap ring slipping out of its groove.
Replacement gaskets cost $4 to $8. Replacing the gasket requires disconnecting the disposal, prying the snap ring, and rebedding the flange in fresh plumber’s putty or 100 percent silicone.
The Grinding Chamber and Impellers
Inside the upper housing you will see the shredder ring lining the chamber wall and two or four impeller lugs riding on the flywheel.
The impellers are not blades. They are blunt metal lugs that swing freely on the flywheel and use centrifugal force to throw food against the shredder ring, which then breaks it down. This design is why disposals are surprisingly safe to fish utensils out of by hand once unplugged — there are no sharp edges.
If the disposal hums but does not grind, an impeller is jammed against the ring. Insert the supplied 1/4-inch hex wrench into the bottom of the disposal and rotate it back and forth to free the flywheel. The diagram will label this hole as the “service wrench socket.”
The Motor and Reset Button
The lower housing contains the induction motor and the overload reset button. The reset button is a small red or black button on the bottom of the disposal.
If the disposal is completely dead, press the reset button. If it pops back out within seconds, the motor is drawing too much current, usually because of a jam upstream or worn bearings.
The motor itself is not user-serviceable. If the motor is bad, replace the entire unit. A new Badger 5 runs about $130 and an Evolution Compact runs about $250.
Discharge Tube and Drain Connection
The discharge tube exits the side of the disposal at the bottom of the chamber and connects via a 90-degree elbow to your drain trap. A rubber gasket and metal flange clamp this joint.
Leaks at the discharge tube are common after the rubber gasket ages. The replacement gasket is a $3 part, and the repair takes 10 minutes once you have a slip-joint pliers in hand.
Dishwasher Inlet
The dishwasher inlet sits on the side of the disposal housing, capped from the factory with a knockout plug. If you have a dishwasher draining into the disposal, the plug was knocked out at installation.
A common leak source is the rubber boot on this inlet. Replacement boots run $5 to $8 from Amazon. Clamping the hose with a fresh stainless hose clamp at the same time prevents future leaks.
Common Repairs by Symptom
Match the symptom to the diagram section, then order parts.
- Leak under the sink at the top of the disposal: Sink flange gasket. Disconnect, pry the snap ring, replace gasket.
- Leak under the disposal at the side: Discharge tube gasket or dishwasher inlet boot.
- Hum but no grind: Jammed flywheel. Free with hex wrench.
- Completely dead: Reset button popped. Press to reset, then investigate jam or wiring.
- Excessive noise or vibration: Worn impellers or loose mounting ring. Worth replacing the whole disposal at this point.
- Slow draining: Clog in the trap below, not in the disposal itself. Disconnect the discharge tube and check.
Where to Find Model-Specific Diagrams
Look at the side of the disposal for a model tag with a number like “Badger 5XP” or “Evolution Excel.” Then visit insinkerator.com under Customer Support, where you can download the service manual PDF for that exact model. Parts diagrams appear in the back of every manual.
Third-party retailers like RepairClinic and PartSelect host the same diagrams and sell individual parts. A typical small parts kit (gaskets, mounting components) runs $15 to $30.
When to Replace Instead of Repair
Disposals are designed for 8 to 12 years of service. If your unit is past 10 years old and any of the following applies, replacement makes more financial sense than repair:
- Motor housing leaks (water in the chamber base)
- Persistent humming after multiple resets
- Bearings noisy under load
- Shredder ring or flywheel worn smooth
A replacement Badger 5 installs in about 45 minutes if the mount is compatible with the existing flange. Always cut power at the breaker before any disposal work.
