Walk down any home-improvement aisle and you will see cans promising to “insulate your home for pennies a square foot.” Most of those claims fall apart under a thermal camera. Real insulating paint exists, but it does not replace fiberglass batts or spray foam, and the marketing claims of cutting heating bills 30 percent are pure fantasy. Here is what these coatings actually do — and when they earn a place on a project.
What Insulating Paint Actually Is
Insulating paint is regular acrylic latex or elastomeric paint blended with hollow ceramic microspheres. The most common brand is Hy-Tech, with competitors like Nansulate and Insul-Aid. The microspheres reduce thermal conductivity slightly and reflect radiant heat. Each gallon adds about 25 percent more cost than premium exterior paint — typically $60 to $90 per gallon.
The technology came out of NASA’s Apollo program for thermal protection on spacecraft. Manufacturers borrowed the marketing to suggest the same physics work on your siding. The results in residential settings are real but small.
What R-Value It Really Adds
The R-value of two coats of insulating paint sits between R-0.5 and R-1.0 — about the same as a single sheet of cardboard. By comparison, R-13 fiberglass batt fills a 2×4 wall, R-19 fits a 2×6, and rigid foam adds R-5 per inch. It also helps on hot water pipes, HVAC ducts running through unconditioned attics, and walls of older homes where you cannot tear into the wall cavity to add proper insulation. Think of it as a finishing touch, not a replacement for the foundation.
Where It Fails
Insulating paint barely affects winter heating bills in cold climates. Cold-weather heat loss is mostly conductive — radiating through walls — and an R-1 coating does not stop conduction. Spending $400 on insulating paint for a 1,500-square-foot home in Minnesota will save maybe $5 to $10 a year in heating costs. The payback period exceeds the paint’s lifespan.
Marketing claims about thermal-bridging fixes, condensation prevention, and miracle attic transformation are not supported by independent studies. The Federal Trade Commission has fined several insulating-paint companies for unsubstantiated R-value claims.
Application: Doing It Right
Apply insulating paint exactly like you would apply premium exterior latex. Power-wash the surface, scrape loose paint, prime bare areas, then roll or spray two coats. The microspheres make the paint slightly thicker — use a half-inch nap roller and back-roll any sprayed sections to get even coverage.
Coverage runs 100 to 150 square feet per gallon — about 30 percent less than regular paint. Plan accordingly. Skip rolling on hot afternoons; the paint flashes too fast and the microspheres do not bond evenly.

Run the numbers before committing. Painting a 1,500-square-foot home in insulating paint runs $1,200 to $2,000 in materials alone, plus labor if hired out. Touch-ups must use the same product. Standard latex paint over insulating paint compromises the reflective performance. Buy an extra gallon when you do the original job and store it sealed for spot repairs.
