Every insulation project starts with the same three numbers: the square footage you’re covering, the R-value you’re targeting, and how much product that actually means at the register. An insulation calculator is just those numbers run through a few simple formulas — and once you know them, you can estimate any attic or wall job on the back of a receipt, sanity-check a contractor’s material list, and avoid the classic 20-percent-short second trip to the store. This guide walks through the math for batts, rolls, and blown-in, with real coverage tables and worked examples.

Step 1: Measure the Area

For attics, measure the footprint of the heated space below (length × width of the house at the ceiling, minus garage), not the sloped roof area. A 40 × 28-foot ranch is 1,120 square feet of attic floor. For walls, multiply the perimeter by wall height and subtract openings: a 40 × 28 house with 8-foot walls has (40+28) × 2 × 8 = 1,088 square feet gross; subtracting ~15 percent for windows and doors leaves roughly 925 net. For floors and crawlspace ceilings, use the footprint of the space. Round up, not down — offcuts and odd bays always eat more than you expect.

Step 2: Pick the Target R-Value

Codes and climate set the target: attics R-38 in the South, R-49 to R-60 in the middle and North (our R49 insulation guide maps the zones); 2×4 walls R-13-R-15; 2×6 walls R-19-R-21; floors R-19-R-30. If you’re topping up, subtract what’s there: existing insulation contributes roughly R-2.5 per inch (old blown fiberglass), R-3.5 per inch (cellulose), or R-3.2 per inch (matted batts). Six inches of old cellulose ≈ R-21, so hitting R-49 means adding about R-28 of new material.

Step 3: Convert Area to Product

Batts and rolls

The formula: bags/bundles needed = net square footage ÷ coverage per package, then add 5-10 percent waste. Coverage is printed on every package; typical numbers for common products:

Match batt width to framing: 15-inch batts fit 16-on-center wood studs, 23-inch batts fit 24-on-center. For walls, a faster check is counting stud bays: one 93-inch batt fills one 8-foot bay, so 40 bays ≈ 40 batts ≈ 4 packages of R-13.

Blown-in (loose fill)

The formula: bags = square footage ÷ coverage per bag at your target R. Coverage per bag shrinks fast as R rises because depth grows. Representative chart values for the two big systems:

These are typical of current coverage charts, but the bag label is the legal document — manufacturers certify bags per 1,000 square feet at each R, and that’s the number an inspector checks. Cellulose charts already build in settling (about 15-20 percent), which is why installed depth exceeds settled depth: R-49 cellulose settles to roughly 13-14 inches but blows in closer to 15-16.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Attic top-up to R-49

1,120-square-foot attic with 4 inches of old blown fiberglass (≈ R-10). Needed: R-39 more. Using blown fiberglass at the R-38 line (~50 sq ft/bag): 1,120 ÷ 50 = 22.4 → 23 bags, plus one spare = 24 bags. At $38/bag: about $912, and most big boxes lend the machine free at that quantity. Depth check: 4 existing + ~15 new inches ≈ 19 inches total — verify your insulation baffles keep the eaves open at that depth.

Example 2: Insulating 2×6 garage walls

Three exterior walls, 44 linear feet × 9 feet = 396 sq ft gross, minus a window and man-door ≈ 360 net. R-21 batts at ~53 sq ft/package: 360 ÷ 53 = 6.8 → 7 packages, ~$65 each = about $455. Count check: 33 stud bays at 16 OC, 9-foot walls — batts come 93 inches, so buy the 105-inch length or plan to piece the top foot.

Example 3: Crawlspace ceiling

28 × 20-foot crawlspace = 560 sq ft. R-19 batts at ~77 sq ft/package: 560 ÷ 77 = 7.3 → 8 packages, faced side up against the subfloor, with twine or wire supports every 18 inches.

Don’t Forget These Line Items

  • Waste factor: 5 percent for simple rectangles, 10 percent for chopped-up framing, hips, and angles.
  • Baffles and dams: one baffle per rafter bay (~$2-3 each), metal dams for flues and non-IC lights, blocking around the hatch.
  • Air sealing kit: 6-10 cans of foam and 4-6 tubes of caulk (~$60-$100) — the highest-ROI dollars in the whole project.
  • Rulers and cards: depth markers every ~300 sq ft and the attic card by the hatch for inspection.
  • PPE: N95s, glasses, gloves, coverall — budget $25-$40.

Checking a Contractor’s Numbers

The same formulas audit a bid. A quote to bring your 1,100-square-foot attic to R-49 with blown fiberglass should reference roughly 25-30 bags depending on your existing base — if the proposal lists 14 bags, you’re buying R-30 no matter what the header says, and if it lists none, ask for the bag count and settled depth in writing. Reputable installers volunteer three numbers without being asked: bags installed, installed depth, and the product’s coverage-chart line, because that trio is what the attic card certifies. Same logic for batts: a wall job quoting “R-19 throughout” on 2×4 framing is specifying a batt that physically cannot loft in a 3.5-inch cavity; the correct 2×4 spec is R-13 or R-15. Depth vs. R: The Quick Conversions

When all you have is a tape measure, these approximations translate existing depth into existing R: blown fiberglass ~R-2.5 per inch, cellulose ~R-3.5, old rock wool ~R-3.0, batts ~R-3.2. Measure in three spots and average — settling is never uniform, and eave bays often hold half the depth of the center field.
