Label each panel and its window with matching numbers on painter’s tape the first season; on an old house, no two openings are the same size, and sorting eight nearly identical panels the following fall is miserable. When Inserts Are the Wrong Call
Skip interior storm windows when the primary sash is failing structurally — rotten rails, broken glass, sashes that will not stay latched — because the insert needs a closed, intact window behind it to create the air pocket. Casement and awning windows with protruding crank hardware need a standoff frame or a track-mount system, which erodes the cost advantage. And egress bedroom windows should get a quick-release system like magnetic mounting so the panel comes off in one motion; check your local code, since some jurisdictions want nothing covering the egress opening at all.
