Installing laminate flooring on uneven floor surfaces is the single most common cause of clicking, gapping, peaking, and bouncy planks, and almost every one of those failures is avoidable. Laminate is a floating floor: the planks lock to each other, not to the subfloor, and that engineering depends on a flat base. When the surface dips and humps beyond tolerance, the locking joints flex with every step, eventually wearing loose and lifting. Before you snap a single plank together, you need to know how flat is flat enough and how to get there.
How Flat Does the Subfloor Need to Be?
Most laminate manufacturers specify a flatness tolerance of about 3/16 inch over a 10-foot span, with some calling for 1/8 inch over 6 feet. That is tighter than it sounds. Lay a long, straight board or level on the floor and look for gaps underneath; if a 3/16-inch shim slides under the straightedge across 10 feet, you are out of tolerance and need to correct it. Check in multiple directions, because a floor can be flat one way and wavy the other. Skipping this measurement is gambling with your warranty, since installing over an out-of-spec subfloor usually voids it.
Why Underlayment Will Not Fix Real Dips
This is the most expensive misconception in DIY laminate. Underlayment is thin, typically 2 to 3 millimeters of foam or felt, and it exists to cushion sound and manage minor moisture and tiny surface texture. It cannot bridge a half-inch dip or absorb a hump. In fact, thicker “fix-it” underlayments often make things worse, creating a spongy floor that flexes even more and accelerates joint failure. Underlayment smooths out grit and slight roughness; it does not level a floor. Anyone who tells you to “just add thicker padding” over a wavy slab is setting you up for callbacks.
Leveling a Low Spot or Dip
For depressions in concrete or wood subfloors, self-leveling compound is the proven fix. It is a pourable cement-based product that flows into low areas and cures dead flat. The process matters:
- Clean and prime the subfloor so the compound bonds and does not flash-dry.
- Mark the low areas, then mix the compound to the manufacturer’s consistency.
- Pour and spread, working quickly because most products set within 20 to 40 minutes.
- Let it cure fully, then re-check flatness with your straightedge before installing.
For localized dips on a wood subfloor, you can also use floor patch or feather-finish compound, troweled and feathered out so the edges blend smoothly into the surrounding surface.
Sanding Down High Spots
Humps and ridges are the opposite problem and need material removed, not added. On a plywood or OSB subfloor, an edge sander or belt sander knocks down high seams and crowned spots, and protruding fasteners should be set or removed. On concrete, a grinder with a diamond cup wheel takes down high points, though it is dusty work that demands a vacuum shroud and a respirator. Always re-check with the straightedge after sanding or grinding, because it is easy to create a new low spot where you removed too much.
The Real Risks of Skipping Prep
Cutting corners on flatness does not show up on day one. It shows up weeks or months later, and the symptoms are predictable:
- Gapping: planks separate at the joints as the floor flexes over voids.
- Peaking: edges of adjoining planks lift into a ridge where a hump pushes them up.
- Clicking and squeaking: planks tap against high spots or rock over hollows underfoot.
- Worn locking edges: repeated flexing wears the click profile until joints fail permanently.
- Voided warranty: manufacturers deny claims when the subfloor was out of tolerance.
By the time these appear, the only real fix is to pull up the floor, level the subfloor properly, and reinstall, which costs far more than doing it right the first time.
When to Bring in a Professional
Minor leveling is well within reach for a careful DIYer, but some situations call for a pro. Large areas that are badly out of level, slabs with moisture problems, or floors that slope significantly toward one corner often indicate structural or drainage issues that need diagnosis before any flooring goes down. If your straightedge reveals dips and humps across the whole room rather than a few isolated spots, getting a flooring contractor to assess and machine-level the surface is money well spent and usually cheaper than a failed installation.
How to Measure Your Floor Properly
Before you can fix anything, you need an accurate picture of where the floor is out of tolerance, and a careful survey takes only an hour. Work methodically across the whole room rather than spot-checking:
- Get a long straightedge, ideally a 6- to 10-foot level or a straight aluminum bar, not a short hand level.
- Slide it across the floor in a grid, both directions, watching for gaps underneath and any rocking.
- Mark the trouble spots directly on the subfloor with a pencil, circling lows and shading highs.
- Measure the gaps with feeler gauges or a tape so you know whether you exceed the 3/16-inch-over-10-feet limit.
This map tells you exactly where to grind and where to pour, and it prevents the wasteful approach of leveling areas that were fine all along.
The Role of a Quality Underlayment
Underlayment will not level a floor, but on a properly flattened subfloor it earns its keep, and choosing the right one matters. A good underlayment cushions footfall sound, smooths out fine surface texture, and on concrete provides a vapor barrier that protects the laminate core from rising moisture. Match it to your subfloor: over concrete, use a product with an integrated moisture barrier; over wood, a standard foam or felt is usually fine. Avoid the temptation to buy an unusually thick or soft underlayment hoping it will mask unevenness, because excessive cushion lets the planks flex and actually accelerates joint wear. The right underlayment supports a flat floor; it cannot rescue a wavy one.
The Bottom Line
Laminate can absolutely go over a previously uneven floor, but only after you bring that floor within the manufacturer’s flatness tolerance, generally 3/16 inch over 10 feet. Measure with a straightedge, fill dips with self-leveling compound, grind or sand down humps, and never expect underlayment to do the leveling for you. The prep is the unglamorous part, but it is what separates a tight, quiet floor that lasts decades from a bouncy, gapping floor you will be tearing out within a year.
