Start With the Vent, Not the Parts

Electric or Gas: Know What You Have

Check the label on the door jamb. An electric dryer plugs into a 240-volt outlet and makes heat with a coil element. A gas dryer plugs into a standard 120-volt outlet and makes heat by burning natural gas or propane with an igniter and gas valve. The diagnosis splits at this fork, so identify your type first.

A useful clue: if the drum turns and the light works but there is zero heat on an electric dryer, one leg of the 240-volt supply may be dead. The drum runs on 120 volts, so it spins while the element gets nothing.

Cause 1: Blown Thermal Fuse

The thermal fuse is a one-shot safety device on the blower or exhaust duct. When the dryer overheats, it blows and cuts power to the heat, and it does not reset. This is the single most common reason a dryer stops heating. Depending on brand, the part costs $6 to $15.

Test it with a multimeter on the ohms setting; a good fuse reads near zero, and a blown one reads infinite (OL). Here is the catch: a thermal fuse blows because of a clogged vent nine times out of ten. Clean the vent before installing a new fuse, or the replacement will blow within a few loads.

Cause 2: Failed Heating Element (Electric)

On an electric dryer the heating element is a coil of nichrome wire in a housing behind the drum or in a rear duct. It burns out or shorts with age, leaving you with no heat at all. Test across the element terminals with your meter; a healthy element reads roughly 8 to 15 ohms, and an open one reads infinite.

Cause 3: Tripped Thermostats and Cut-Offs

Beyond the thermal fuse, dryers use a cycling thermostat to hold temperature and a high-limit thermostat plus a thermal cut-off as backup safeties. Any of these can open and kill the heat. Test each for continuity; a good thermostat reads near zero ohms at room temperature, and an open one reads infinite.

These parts are inexpensive, usually $10 to $25 for a thermostat kit. As with the fuse, a tripped high-limit thermostat points back to restricted airflow, so confirm the vent is clear before replacing it. Replace matched safety parts as a set for reliability.

Cause 4: Gas Igniter, Flame Sensor or Valve

On a gas dryer the igniter glows hot, the flame sensor confirms it, and the gas valve coils open to light the burner. A cracked igniter that no longer glows is the classic no-heat failure, and the part runs $15 to $35.

Watch the burner through the inspection port. If the igniter glows but no flame follows, the gas valve coils are likely bad, about $30. If it never glows, the igniter is open or a fuse or thermostat upstream cut its power. Cause 5: Power Supply Problem (Electric)

If your electric dryer spins but every heat part tests good, look at the circuit. A double-pole breaker can trip on just one pole, leaving 120 volts for the drum but nothing for the element. Reset the breaker fully off and back on. In an older fuse panel, replace both 30-amp cartridge fuses even if only one looks blown. Check the outlet for scorching, which signals a loose, overheating connection and a real fire risk.

A Safe Order of Operations
