The Universal Sequence

Regardless of surface, a patio is a layer cake: undisturbed or compacted subgrade at the bottom, 4 to 8 inches of compacted crushed stone base, a 1-inch setting bed (sand, stone dust, or mortar depending on material), the surface itself, and restrained edges. Poured concrete swaps the setting bed and units for a 4-inch reinforced slab on the same prepared base. Roughly 60 to 70 percent of total labor happens before any visible material goes down — that ratio is the single best way to judge whether a contractor’s quote is doing the job right.

Step 1: Layout, Utilities, and Excavation

Mark the footprint with paint and stakes, call 811 for utility locates (free, allow three business days), and confirm the finished surface will sit 1 inch or more below any door threshold and slope away from the house at 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot. Then dig. Excavation depth equals base plus bedding plus surface thickness — typically 7 to 10 inches below finished grade for pavers, 8 inches for a slab in most climates, deeper where frost is severe.

For a 300 sq ft patio, that’s 7 to 9 cubic yards of spoil, which is the most underestimated part of any DIY install. A rented skid steer ($250 to $350 per day) or a hired excavation crew turns two brutal weekends of hand digging into half a day.

Step 2: The Base — Where Quality Lives

Spread crushed stone with fines (called ABC, road base, or 21A depending on region — about $30 to $45 per ton) in 2- to 3-inch lifts, compacting each pass with a rented plate compactor ($90 to $120 per day). Four inches of compacted base suits foot-traffic patios in mild climates; go 6 to 8 inches in freeze-thaw regions or over clay soil. Many pros add woven geotextile fabric ($0.30 to $0.50 per sq ft) between soil and stone on soft ground — cheap insurance against the base pumping down into mud.

Step 4: Edges, Joints, and Lockdown

Unit surfaces (pavers, brick, flagstone) need edge restraint — concealed plastic or aluminum edging spiked into the base, a soldier course set in concrete, or an existing hard border. Without it, joints open and the field migrates within two seasons. Joint treatment finishes the job: polymeric sand swept and misted for pavers and brick, stone dust or planted joints for flagstone, and sealed control joints for concrete. A final pass with a plate compactor (protected by a pad on delicate surfaces) seats everything into the bedding.

Timeline: What to Expect

A professional crew installs a 300 sq ft paver patio in two to four days: day one demo and excavation, day two base, days three and four laying and finishing. Poured concrete is faster on site — one day of prep, a half-day pour — but needs 24 to 48 hours before foot traffic and a week before furniture. The same paver patio as a DIY project realistically spans three to four weekends. Weather matters: concrete wants 40 to 85°F and no rain for a day; base work anytime the ground isn’t frozen or saturated.

Cost Breakdown and DIY Math

Installed professional pricing runs $6 to $12 per sq ft for plain concrete, $10 to $20 for concrete pavers, $14 to $25 for brick, and $15 to $30 for flagstone. DIY cuts those numbers roughly in half — on a 300 sq ft paver patio, materials run $1,500 to $2,500 against a $3,600 to $5,500 contract price — but only if you don’t botch the base and pay for it twice. Honest DIY assessment: base prep is unskilled but heavy labor; laying pavers is satisfying and forgiving; finishing poured concrete is a perishable skill you should not learn on your own patio. Plenty of homeowners split the difference — hire out excavation and base, lay the surface themselves.

Drainage, Conduit, and Add-Ons to Handle Mid-Build

Certain upgrades cost almost nothing during installation and a small fortune after. Sleeve the base with one or two runs of 1-inch PVC conduit before the surface goes down ($20 in material) so future lighting, speaker, or gas lines never require demolition. If the yard drains toward the patio, trench a catch basin or channel drain into the excavation now — a $150 drain kit installed mid-build versus a $1,000-plus retrofit. First-Year Care After Installation

New patios settle into service with a little attention. Paver joints lose some polymeric sand to the first storms; top up and re-mist bare spots at month one. Concrete wants sealing after 28 days of cure, then every two to three years. Watch the surface after the first hard rain and mark any spot that puddles longer than an hour — one low paver is a ten-minute lift-and-re-bed fix while the sand is young, and a permanent birdbath if you ignore it.

Hiring It Out: Vetting the Bid

Get three quotes and compare the invisible line items, not the price. A proper bid specifies excavation depth, base material and compacted thickness, geotextile if soil warrants, bedding type, edge restraint, and slope. A contractor who can’t tell you their base spec in one sentence is guessing. Written warranties on hardscape typically run two to five years on workmanship — settling and heaving are workmanship, so get the word “settling” into the contract explicitly. Ask to see a job that’s five-plus years old — every installer’s work looks good the week it’s finished.
