Pink Mildew in Shower: Complete Guide for Homeowners

That salmon-colored film creeping along your grout lines and shower curtain looks like mildew but isn’t actually mold at all. Pink mildew in shower stalls is technically Serratia marcescens, an airborne bacteria that thrives on the soap scum, mineral deposits, and biofilm hiding in damp bathroom surfaces. Calling it mildew is a misnomer that causes most homeowners to use the wrong cleaner — bleach kills the visible color but doesn’t reach the bacterial colony living inside the porous grout, so it returns within two to three weeks.

What Pink Mildew Actually Is

The pink mildew in shower environments is, biologically speaking, not mildew at all. Serratia marcescens is a gram-negative bacteria found everywhere — soil, air, on human skin. The pink to red-orange pigment, called prodigiosin, appears when colonies grow on phosphate-rich, fatty residues. Soap scum is the perfect food source. Cleaning Stained Caulk and Grout

If pink staining has worked into older silicone caulk, no surface cleaner will fully remove it. The pigment penetrates the silicone matrix.
