A frozen window air conditioner is the cruelest July problem. You turn it on, it cycles for an hour, and then warm air starts blowing while a sheet of ice creeps across the front coil. The quick fix for window AC freezing up almost always comes down to airflow or refrigerant, and in 80% of cases you can solve it without a tech visit and without spending more than $30. The trick is knowing which symptom points to which fix.

Why Window Units Freeze in the First Place
Refrigerant inside the indoor coil drops to about 40 degrees F when the system is working correctly. Warm room air passes across the coil, cools off, and blows back into the room. If anything reduces that warm airflow — a dirty filter, a blocked vent, a slow fan motor — the coil temperature crashes below freezing, condensation turns to ice, and the cycle compounds. More ice means less airflow which means more ice.
Low refrigerant charge causes the same problem from the opposite direction. Less refrigerant means the coil runs colder than designed, hits the dew point earlier, and freezes regardless of airflow.
Step 1: Shut It Down and Thaw Completely
Turn the unit off. Leave the fan running on “fan only” mode for 2 to 3 hours to speed up thawing. Place a towel along the front of the unit because melting ice will drip. Do not chip the ice — the aluminum fins bend at the slightest pressure and a kinked fin permanently restricts airflow.
Use this thaw time to diagnose. Trying to troubleshoot while the coil is iced over is like checking your tires while the car is moving. Patience for two hours saves you a service call.
Step 2: Pull and Clean the Air Filter
The filter sits behind the front grille on every window AC made in the last 30 years. Snap the grille off (clips or one or two screws on most models), slide the filter out, and look at it. If you cannot see daylight through the mesh, that is your problem.
Vacuum the filter, then rinse with warm water and a drop of Dawn until the water runs clear. Air dry for 30 minutes — never reinstall it wet. A clogged filter is the cause of 60% of freezing complaints I have diagnosed on service calls.
Step 3: Check the Evaporator Coil
With the filter out, shine a flashlight at the aluminum fins behind it. Dust, lint, and pet hair build up on the surface and act exactly like a clogged filter. Spray the coil with a no-rinse coil cleaner like Frost King ACF19 ($10) or Web Coil Cleaner ($14). Let it foam for 10 minutes, then turn the fan on and let condensate flush the debris into the drain pan.
For heavy buildup, comb the fins with a fin comb ($8) before cleaning. Set the comb teeth to match the fin spacing (usually 14 or 15 fins per inch) and pull it gently along the coil to straighten bent fins.
Step 4: Confirm Adequate Airflow Out the Vents
With the unit running on high fan, hold a sheet of tissue paper an inch in front of the discharge vent. The tissue should snap parallel to the floor. If it droops or flutters weakly, airflow is below spec.
Check the inside of the cabinet for the blower wheel. A buildup of dust and lint on the squirrel-cage blower drastically reduces output even after the coil is clean. Vacuum the blower with a brush attachment. Severely caked blowers need wheel removal and a soak in warm soapy water — a 30 to 45 minute job for anyone comfortable with a screwdriver.
Step 5: Verify Thermostat and Mode Settings
Counterintuitively, running the unit too cold causes freezing in mild weather. Set the thermostat no lower than 70 degrees F when outdoor temps drop below 75 degrees F. The compressor cycles less, the coil never gets enough time to freeze.
Use “cool” mode and a mid-range fan speed, not “economy” or “auto fan.” Auto-fan settings shut the blower off when the compressor cycles off, which gives the iced-over coil less time to thaw between cycles. Continuous fan operation prevents the freeze in the first place.
Step 6: Inspect the Drain Channel
Window units rely on a slight rear tilt — about 1/4 inch lower in the back — to drain condensate outside. If the unit has shifted forward in the window frame, water pools inside the cabinet and refreezes overnight. Recheck the level with a phone app, and add washers or rubber wedges under the front mounting bracket to restore the tilt.
While you have the cover off, look for the small drain port at the bottom rear of the cabinet. Clear any algae or debris with a pipe cleaner. A blocked drain forces water back into the coil area where it ices.
Step 7: When It’s Refrigerant
If the filter is clean, the coil is clean, airflow is strong, and the unit still freezes after one hour of operation, the refrigerant charge is low. Window units are sealed systems. You cannot legally recharge them without EPA Section 608 certification, and the access ports are not even installed on most consumer units.
At that point, you have a $35 service-call decision tree:
- Unit under 5 years old: contact manufacturer warranty — many cover the sealed system 5 to 10 years
- Unit 5 to 8 years old: pay $150 to $300 for diagnostic plus charge — usually worth it for higher-end models
- Unit over 8 years old or a low-cost brand: replace with a new 8,000 to 12,000 BTU unit ($220 to $480 at Home Depot)
Preventing the Next Freeze
Wash the filter every 30 days during cooling season. Pull the unit and deep-clean the coils once a year before summer starts. Avoid running the AC below 65 degrees F outdoor ambient — refrigeration cycles are not designed for that range and freezing is almost guaranteed. Keep furniture and curtains at least 18 inches away from the discharge so airflow does not bounce back into the unit.
