Here’s where it belongs, what it costs, and when to spend up to R21 instead.

The Spec Sheet: Thickness, Widths, and the Compression Catch

R19 is standard-density fiberglass at 6-1/4 inches loft, sold in 15-inch and 23-inch widths as precut batts or long rolls, kraft-faced or unfaced, from all the major brands. At full loft — laid flat on an attic floor or in an open joist bay deeper than 6-1/4 inches — it delivers its full R19. Squeezed into a 5-1/2-inch 2×6 wall, it performs at roughly R18, because compressing fiberglass removes the trapped air doing the insulating. That’s not a scandal, just physics worth knowing when you compare it against R21, the high-density batt made at exactly 5-1/2 inches to fill a 2×6 wall without compression. The same principle scales down: crushing an R19 batt into a 3-1/2-inch 2×4 cavity yields only about R13’s worth of performance while wasting money — buy the batt made for the cavity, always.

Use One: 2×6 Exterior Walls

Any home framed with 2×6 walls — standard in cold climates and increasingly common everywhere — takes R19 or R21 in the cavity. R19 is the value pick at $0.50 to $0.80 per square foot; R21 typically runs $0.75 to $1.10 and buys you about 17 percent more real-world wall R. The decision mirrors the R13-versus-R15 question in 2×4 framing (covered in our R15 insulation guide): warm and mixed climates where code is satisfied, R19 is fine; cold climates and never-open-this-wall-again projects justify R21. Either way, current codes in the coldest zones may still call for continuous exterior foam on top of the cavity fill — the batt is one layer of the answer, not the whole answer.

Use Two: Floors and Crawl Spaces — the Classic R19 Job

Ask an insulation contractor what R19 is for and many will say “floors” before “walls.” Underfloor insulation over a vented crawl space or unconditioned basement is the historic home of this product: floor framing is commonly 2×8 or deeper, so the 6-1/4-inch batt installs at full loft and full rating, and R19 meets the floor requirement across a large swath of US climate zones (colder regions step up to R30). Install with the facing up against the subfloor — the warm side — and support the batts with insulation wire stays (“tiger tails,” about $15 per 100) or strapping every 18 inches; gravity is the enemy, and sagging batts that pull away from the subfloor lose much of their value. Use Three: Garage Ceilings, Attic Layers, and Sound Floors

Three more places R19 earns its keep. Garage ceilings under bedrooms are a notorious cold-floor complaint, and R19 in those joist bays (full loft if the framing is 2×8) is the standard fix. Unfaced runs slightly less; 23-inch widths price about the same per square foot. Installed by a contractor, expect $1.00 to $1.80 per square foot depending on access (crawl space work commands the high end for obvious, muddy reasons). Faced, Unfaced, and Which Direction

The vapor retarder rule follows the warm side. Walls in most of the country: kraft facing toward the interior. Floors over unconditioned space: facing up, against the subfloor. Attic layering over existing insulation: unfaced only — a second vapor retarder mid-stack traps moisture. Interior sound floors and walls: unfaced. And the standing safety rule: kraft paper is flammable and must be covered by a finish material wherever it would otherwise be exposed, which in garages and basements usually means choosing unfaced product from the start.

Installation Tips That Protect Your R

Full-loft applications are forgiving — lay it flat, butt the joints tight, done. Cavity work rewards care: cut pieces a half-inch oversize for friction fit, split the batt around wiring and plumbing rather than stuffing it behind, pack behind electrical boxes, and air-seal penetrations before any insulation goes in, because fiberglass filters moving air rather than stopping it. In floor bays, insist on full contact with the subfloor — a batt sagged two inches below the floor is insulating the crawl space air, not your feet. Standard PPE applies: sleeves, gloves, glasses, N95. None of this is difficult; it’s just the difference between the R19 on the label and the R14 a careless install actually delivers.

Common R19 Mistakes

The same handful of errors shows up in inspection reports over and over. Leading the list: cramming R19 into 2×4 walls because the roll was on sale — you pay R19 money for R13 performance and bulge the drywall doing it. Close behind is facing direction in floors; batts installed paper-down over a crawl space put the vapor retarder on the cold side, inviting condensation against the fiberglass — the paper belongs up, against the subfloor. Unsupported floor batts are the slow-motion version of the same waste: without wire stays or strapping, gravity peels them away from the subfloor within a few years, and an air gap above the batt largely cancels it. In attic top-offs, using leftover faced product as a second layer traps moisture mid-stack; unfaced only, always.

Subtler but just as costly: draping batts over junction boxes and can lights instead of cutting around them (a fire issue at non-IC-rated fixtures, a performance issue everywhere else), skipping the rim joist while insulating a floor — the coldest, leakiest band in the assembly — and treating the batt as an air barrier. Fiberglass slows conduction; it does nothing about the wind sneaking through the sill plate. Caulk and foam first, insulate second, and R19 will actually deliver the number on the label.
