Buying nice LED downlights and then scattering them across the ceiling by eye is how rooms end up with dark corners, hot spots over the coffee table, and a grid that looks slightly off no matter where you stand. A proper recessed lighting layout is mostly arithmetic — spacing, wall setbacks, and count — and getting those numbers right is the difference between even, comfortable light and an amateur job. This guide gives you the rules of thumb and a repeatable process to lay out any room.

Start With the Job the Lights Do

Before spacing anything, decide what the lights are for, because it changes the plan:

  • Ambient (general) lighting: Even, overall illumination for the whole room. This is the classic evenly spaced grid.
  • Task lighting: Focused light over a work surface — kitchen counters, a desk, a reading chair. Place lights directly over the task, not centered on the room.
  • Accent lighting: Washing a wall, art, or a fireplace. Uses adjustable or wall-wash trims set closer to the wall.

Most rooms mix ambient with a bit of task or accent. Plan the ambient grid first, then add task and accent lights where needed.

The Ceiling-Height Spacing Rule

The most useful rule of thumb: divide your ceiling height by two to get the maximum spacing between fixtures.

  • 8-foot ceiling: about 4 feet between lights.
  • 9-foot ceiling: about 4.5 feet.
  • 10-foot ceiling: about 5 feet.

That gives even ambient coverage without dark gaps. Tighten the spacing for brighter rooms or where you want fewer shadows; loosen it slightly for large open rooms where the lights are supplemental. This spacing applies both directions — between columns and between rows.

Wall Setback: Keep Lights Off the Perimeter

Do not push the first row of lights tight against the wall or dead into the corners. Set the outer fixtures about 1.5 to 3 feet from the wall (a common target is 2 to 2.5 feet). Reasons:

  • Too close to the wall creates scalloped hot spots and wastes light on the wall.
  • Too far leaves the room’s edges dark.
  • A consistent setback all around makes the grid look intentional.

If you specifically want to wall-wash to highlight a feature wall or art, that is the exception — place those lights closer, roughly 1.5 to 2 feet off the wall, and use wall-wash trims aimed at it.

How Many Lights Do You Need

Two ways to estimate:

Quick method (by spacing)

  1. Take the room dimensions.
  2. Subtract the wall setbacks from each side to get the usable field.
  3. Divide the field by your target spacing to get the number of lights per row and the number of rows.

Example: a 12 x 16 ft room, 8-ft ceiling. Setback 2 ft each side leaves 8 x 12 ft. At 4-ft spacing that is roughly 3 lights across and 4 down — about a 3×4 grid, 12 lights, adjusted for symmetry.

Brightness method (by lumens)

For a light-level check, target lumens per square foot by room type:

  • Living room / bedroom: ~10–20 lumens/sq ft.
  • Kitchen / bathroom: ~30–40 lumens/sq ft (task areas higher).
  • Hallway: ~5–10 lumens/sq ft.

Multiply room square footage by the target, then divide by each fixture’s lumen output (a 6-inch LED downlight often puts out 700–1,000 lumens) to estimate fixture count. Cross-check this against the spacing method and go with whichever gives the more even, adequate result.

Laying Out the Grid, Step by Step

  1. Sketch the room to scale on graph paper or a layout app, including the ceiling height.
  2. Mark the wall setbacks to define the usable field.
  3. Divide the field by your spacing to place rows and columns; nudge for symmetry so the border margins match on opposite walls.
  4. Center the grid on the room’s main axis so it reads as balanced from the primary sightline (usually the doorway).
  5. Add task lights directly over counters, islands, and work zones, ignoring the ambient grid where needed.
  6. Add accent/wall-wash lights near feature walls or art.

Avoid These Common Mistakes

  • Lights over the wrong spot: In a kitchen, center downlights over the front edge of the counter — not the room center — so your body does not cast a shadow on the work surface.
  • Ignoring joists: Check joist direction before finalizing; a light may need to shift a few inches to clear a joist. Canless fixtures fit between joists more easily.
  • Fighting ceiling obstructions: HVAC runs, plumbing, and beams above the ceiling can force a fixture to move — verify the cavity is clear.
  • Too few lights spaced too far: Dark valleys between fixtures; respect the height-divided-by-two rule.
  • Crowding the walls: Scalloping and wasted light; honor the setback.
  • Mixing color temperatures: Keep all fixtures in a room the same Kelvin so the light is uniform.

Special Rooms

  • Kitchen: Ambient grid plus task lights over counters, sink, and island. An island often takes 2–3 evenly spaced lights or pendants centered over it.
  • Bathroom: A downlight in the shower (wet-rated/IC) and general ambient; avoid relying on recessed cans alone for the vanity — add vanity lighting to kill face shadows.
  • Hallway: A single row centered down the hall, spaced per the height rule.
  • Sloped/vaulted ceiling: Use fixtures with sloped-ceiling trims or adjustable eyeballs so the beam aims straight down.

Layering Recessed With Other Light Sources

Recessed downlights are excellent for even, overhead illumination, but a room lit by cans alone often feels flat and clinical, with shadows under faces and cabinets. The best layouts treat recessed lighting as one layer among several. Add a layer of task lighting — under-cabinet strips in the kitchen, a vanity fixture at the bathroom mirror, a reading lamp by a chair — where people actually do close work, because a downlight overhead casts your own shadow onto the task. Add a layer of accent or decorative light — a pendant over the island, sconces flanking a fireplace, a chandelier in the dining room — to give the eye a focal point and warmth. When you plan the recessed grid, leave room for these other sources rather than trying to make cans do everything.

Working Around Ceiling Obstructions

A perfect grid on paper collides with reality above the drywall. Before finalizing, map the joist direction, because a fixture centered on a joist has to shift a few inches to clear it — canless discs fit between joists more forgivingly than deep cans. Watch for HVAC ducts, plumbing drains and vents, and structural beams in the cavity; any of these can force a light to move. In a kitchen, coordinate downlights with the location of upper cabinets and a range hood so a can does not end up half-hidden behind a cabinet or crowding the hood. Snap your planned centers onto the ceiling with tape, then go into the attic or probe with a small pilot hole to confirm each spot is clear before committing to the cut.

Color Temperature and Bulb Consistency

Even a mathematically perfect layout looks wrong if the lights do not match in color. Pick one color temperature per room and hold to it: 2700K to 3000K for a warm, relaxed feel in living rooms and bedrooms; 3500K to 4000K for a crisp, functional look in kitchens, baths, and offices; 5000K daylight for garages and workshops. Match the CRI (color rendering index) too; look for 90+ where accurate color matters, such as a kitchen or a dressing area. Dimming and Zones

Group lights into logical switch zones and put them on LED-compatible dimmers. A living room benefits from separating the perimeter ambient lights from any accent lights so you can set the mood. Kitchens often split task lights over the counters from the general grid.

Verify Before You Cut

Once the grid is on paper, transfer it to the ceiling with a laser or a chalk line and painter’s tape marking each fixture center. Live with the tape marks for a day — stand at the doorway, imagine the beams, and confirm nothing lands awkwardly over a walkway or a seating spot before you cut a single hole.

A clean recessed lighting layout is not guesswork — it is the ceiling-height-divided-by-two spacing rule, a consistent 2-foot-ish wall setback, and a symmetrical grid centered on the room, with task and accent lights added where the work and the features are. Sketch it to scale, check for joists and obstructions, keep color temperatures uniform, and tape out the plan before cutting. Do that and the finished ceiling will light the room evenly and look like it was designed, not scattered.
