Nothing exposes a rushed lighting job faster than a ceiling full of cans that are too close, too far apart, or hovering awkwardly over the middle of nowhere. A good recessed lighting calculator approach takes the guesswork out — it tells you how many fixtures a room needs and exactly where to place them so the light is even, glare-free, and actually useful. You don’t need software. You need three numbers and a couple of formulas I’ll walk you through with real rooms as examples.

The Two Numbers That Drive Everything

Every recessed layout comes down to fixture count and fixture spacing, and both flow from your ceiling height and the room’s dimensions. Get these two right and the rest is just marking a grid.

Start by measuring your room’s length and width in feet, and note your ceiling height. Standard homes run 8-foot ceilings; higher ceilings need lights spaced closer together relative to their spread because the beam widens before it reaches the floor.

Spacing: The Ceiling-Height Rule

The fastest reliable rule contractors use: divide your ceiling height by two, and that’s your maximum spacing between fixtures in feet.

  • 8-foot ceiling → space cans about 4 feet apart.
  • 9-foot ceiling → about 4.5 feet apart.
  • 10-foot ceiling → about 5 feet apart.

That gives general ambient coverage with no dark gaps. For a brighter, more layered look — kitchens, offices, anywhere you do tasks — tighten spacing by about 20%, so those 4-foot gaps become closer to 3 to 3.5 feet. Perimeter cans should sit roughly 2 to 3 feet off the wall, never centered on the wall line, so the light washes down without scalloping the wall unevenly.

How Many Cans: The Wattage Method

Spacing tells you the grid; wattage tells you whether that grid delivers enough light. Work it in lumens, since LED trims are rated in lumens now, not watts. The rough targets by room type (in foot-candles, which is lumens per square foot):

  • Living room / bedroom (ambient): 10–20 foot-candles.
  • Kitchen general: 30–40 foot-candles.
  • Kitchen counters / task areas: 50–70 foot-candles.
  • Bathroom: 30–40 foot-candles.

Here’s the working formula. Multiply room square footage by your target foot-candles to get total lumens needed. Divide by the lumen output of one fixture to get the number of fixtures.

Example: A 12 × 15 living room is 180 square feet. At 20 foot-candles you need 3,600 lumens. A common 6-inch LED can puts out about 800 lumens. 3,600 ÷ 800 = 4.5, so you’d install 5 fixtures — but check that against spacing. At 4-foot spacing a 12 × 15 room comfortably fits a grid of 6 cans (2 rows of 3). Six 800-lumen cans give 4,800 lumens, or 27 foot-candles — a touch bright for a living room, which is exactly why you put them on a dimmer.

Laying Out the Grid

Once you know count and spacing, place the fixtures on a balanced grid so the border gaps match the internal gaps as closely as possible. Take the room width, subtract the two edge setbacks, and divide the remaining distance evenly among your columns. Do the same for length.

Worked example for a 12-foot-wide room, 3 columns of cans: Set the outer cans 2.5 feet from each wall. That leaves 7 feet between the outer two cans, and with a can in the middle, each gap is 3.5 feet — right in the sweet spot for a kitchen. Snap a chalk line for each row and column, then mark intersections. That’s your layout.

Fixture Size and Trim Choices

Bulb spread and can size matter as much as the grid. A few guidelines from experience:

  • 4-inch cans — accent and task light, tighter spacing, good over counters and in hallways.
  • 6-inch cans — the workhorse for general room lighting; most 800–1,000 lumen retrofit trims are this size.
  • Choose beam spread by purpose: a 40-degree flood for ambient wash, a narrower 25–30 degree for accenting art or a fireplace.
  • Color temperature: 2700K–3000K for living spaces and bedrooms, 3500K–4000K for kitchens, baths, and workspaces. Buy trims with a selectable CCT switch and you can tune it after install.

Where Homeowners Go Wrong

Two mistakes dominate. The first is centering a single fixture in the middle of a room and wondering why it feels like an interrogation. Recessed lights are a distributed system — a grid, not a centerpiece. The second is ignoring furniture and function. A can placed dead-center might land directly over your coffee table, but the reading chair in the corner sits in shadow. Sketch the furniture first, then layer task cans where people actually do things and ambient cans to fill the rest.

Also mind the joists and any HVAC or plumbing in the ceiling cavity. Your perfect math grid means nothing if a can lands on a floor joist. Use a stud finder and adjust — a fixture shifted 6 inches to clear a joist won’t ruin the look.

Don’t Forget the Controls and Wiring

Group your cans into zones on separate dimmer switches — kitchen perimeter separate from island, for instance — so you can set moods and save energy. LED-compatible dimmers matter; a cheap incandescent dimmer will make quality LEDs flicker and buzz. And remember that adding recessed lighting is real electrical work: you’re running cable, tapping a circuit, and often adding a switch box. In most jurisdictions that requires a permit, and any new circuit must respect existing load. If the wiring runs beyond your comfort, bring in a licensed electrician for the connections while you handle the layout planning.

Wall Washing vs. Downlighting

Not every can should point straight down. Where you place fixtures relative to the walls changes the whole feel of the room, and understanding two techniques helps you plan a better grid.

Downlighting is the standard — cans centered in the space throwing light straight down for general illumination. Wall washing places cans 18 to 30 inches out from a wall, often with an eyeball or adjustable trim angled slightly toward it, to graze light down the surface. Wall washing makes a room feel larger and brighter because lit vertical surfaces read as more luminous than a dark-walled room with a bright floor. Use it on a wall with art, a bookcase, or a fireplace, or along a long hallway to open it up. A practical layout mixes both: a row of wall-wash cans along a feature wall plus a grid of downlights for the rest of the room.

A Full Kitchen Example, Start to Finish

Say you have a 14 × 12 foot kitchen, 8-foot ceiling, with a run of counter along one wall and an island. Work it in stages:

  1. General ambient grid: at 4-foot spacing, a 14 × 12 room fits a 3 × 3 grid of nine cans, outer cans about 2.5 feet off the walls. Nine 800-lumen cans give 7,200 lumens over 168 square feet — about 43 foot-candles, right for kitchen general light.
  2. Counter task lighting: add smaller 4-inch cans 24 to 30 inches out from the wall, directly over the countertop edge, spaced 3 feet apart, so you’re not working in your own shadow.
  3. Island: center two or three cans (or pendants) over the island for both task and visual anchor.
  4. Zoning: put the perimeter grid, the counter cans, and the island on separate LED dimmers.

That layered approach — ambient plus task plus feature — is what makes a professionally lit kitchen feel effortless instead of flat.
