Residential Types of Roofs: A Practical Guide to Shapes and Materials

A roof does more visual work than any other element on a house, and it also costs more to replace than almost any other system. Understanding the residential types of roofs by both shape and material helps you make better decisions on a new build, an addition, or a re-roofing project. The cheapest roof to install is rarely the cheapest over a 30-year ownership window, and the prettiest roof shape may not be the smartest in your climate.

Gable Roof: The American Default

The gable roof is the simplest pitched roof and the most common in US residential construction. Two roof planes meet at a central ridge, forming triangular gable ends at each side of the house. Pitch ranges from 4:12 in mild climates to 12:12 in snow regions. Gables shed water and snow well, attic ventilation is straightforward, and the structure is cheap to frame.

Material cost for a basic gable in asphalt shingles runs $4 to $7 per square foot installed. The downside is wind vulnerability at the gable ends, which is why building codes in hurricane zones (Florida, coastal Carolinas, Gulf Coast) require additional bracing and sometimes ban tall gables outright.

Hip Roof: Better in Wind

Hip roofs slope inward on all four sides, eliminating gable ends. Gambrel roofs (often called barn roofs) work on the same principle with two slopes per side, but they are symmetrical front-to-back rather than wrapping all four sides. Flat Roofs in Residential Use

Modern and mid-century home designs increasingly use flat or nearly flat roofs. True flat roofs have a slight slope (1/4 inch per foot is the IRC minimum) for drainage, with TPO, PVC, or EPDM membrane systems. Pricing runs $6 to $11 per square foot installed.

The advantage is full usable interior volume below, easy solar panel mounting, and a clean modernist exterior. Downsides include shorter lifespan (15 to 25 years for membrane systems vs. 25 to 50 for shingles) and the need for vigilant maintenance to prevent ponding and leaks.
