One of the most popular decorative concrete textures of the last sixty years is made with a material that costs about $6 a bag at any hardware store. A rock salt concrete finish is created by pressing coarse salt crystals into fresh concrete, letting the slab set, then washing the salt away to leave a field of small, smooth-edged pits scattered across the surface. The result looks like weathered stone, adds real slip resistance around pools, and hides minor surface blemishes that would glare on a steel-troweled slab. It is also one of the few decorative finishes a competent DIYer can pull off on a first attempt — if the timing is right.
What the Finish Looks Like and Where It Works
The signature is random pitting: shallow craters from 1/8 to 3/8 inch across and 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep, spread irregularly like rain spots on dry dust. Density is a design choice — a light broadcast reads as subtle weathering, while a heavy broadcast approaches travertine’s pocked character. The finish pairs naturally with integrally colored concrete in buff, adobe, or gray-green tones, and it was a mid-century California staple around pools and garden paths for good reason: the pits break up surface water and give bare feet grip without the aggressive rasp of a heavy broom finish.
Best uses are pool decks, patios, walkways, and porches. It is a poor choice for driveways in snow country (more on that below) and for surfaces that need to be dead-smooth for rolling loads, since the pits catch small caster wheels.
The Right Salt for the Job
Use coarse rock salt — the kind sold as water-softener salt or ice-melt rock salt — with crystals roughly 1/8 to 3/8 inch. Water-softener crystals from a 40-pound bag ($6 to $9) are the trade favorite because the gradation is consistent. Avoid fine table or pool salt, which leaves pinpricks too small to read as texture, and avoid salt pellets or blocks, which are too round and too large. Coverage runs 3 to 6 pounds per 100 square feet for a standard look, up to 10 pounds per 100 square feet for a heavy travertine effect. One bag comfortably textures a 400-square-foot patio.
How the Process Works, Step by Step
Rock salting happens inside the normal finishing sequence of a pour, and the entire art is timing.
- Place, strike, and float the slab as usual. Edge and joint the slab, then apply the final finish you want between the pits — most crews use a light steel trowel or a fine broom.
- Wait for the right window. The concrete must be firm enough that a thumb pressed hard leaves only a 1/4-inch dent. Too early and the salt sinks out of sight; too late and it will not embed at all. On a 70°F day this window opens roughly 1 to 2 hours after placement and lasts maybe 30 minutes.
- Broadcast the salt by hand in sweeping arcs, like feeding chickens, aiming for random coverage. Deliberately uneven is correct; rows and clumps read as artificial.
- Press the crystals in with a flat trowel, a fresno on a pole for big slabs, or a roller. Each crystal should sit two-thirds buried with its top just proud of the surface, surrounded by a small ridge of paste.
- Cure, then wash. Let the slab set 24 hours (some finishers wait 48 in cool weather), then dissolve the salt out with a garden hose and stiff broom. Pressure washing at low pressure speeds it up. The salt disappears and the pits remain.
Because the window is short, have the salt in buckets and a helper ready before the pour begins. On slabs over 300 square feet, salt and press in sections as each area reaches thumbprint stage rather than trying to treat the whole slab at once.
The Cold-Climate Warning
Here is the caveat every honest finisher gives: rock salt finishes and freeze-thaw climates are a bad marriage. The pits collect water; when that water freezes, it expands about 9 percent and stresses the pit walls, so salted surfaces scale and spall faster in Minneapolis than in Phoenix. Compounding this, deicing salts concentrate in the depressions. If you love the look and live in a freezing climate, use air-entrained concrete (5 to 7 percent air), keep the pitting on the shallow side, seal religiously with a penetrating siloxane sealer every other year, and never apply deicers. In the Sun Belt, none of this is a concern, which is exactly why the finish flourished there.
Cost: DIY and Contractor Numbers
As a contractor upcharge, rock salting is one of the cheapest decorative options in the book — typically $1 to $2 per square foot added to a standard pour, versus $8 to $15 per square foot extra for stamping. A new 400-square-foot salted patio in integral color lands around $8 to $13 per square foot all-in depending on region. DIY, the texture itself costs almost nothing beyond the pour: a bag of salt, a fresno rental, and a sealer. The real cost is risk — a blown timing window on a one-shot pour. Practice on a test slab or a back walkway before salting the patio everyone will see.
Sealing and Long-Term Maintenance
Wait the cure period your mix requires — 28 days for full cure, though many sealers allow application at 14 — then seal. A solvent- or water-based acrylic sealer ($30 to $50 per gallon, 200 to 300 square feet per gallon on textured concrete) deepens integral color and sheds stains; a penetrating silane/siloxane sealer leaves the appearance untouched while blocking water absorption, which is the smarter chemistry in freeze zones. Because pits trap grime, plan on an annual wash with detergent and a stiff brush or a low-pressure power wash. Resealing every two to three years keeps the pit edges crisp; neglected salt finishes soften visually as the pit rims erode.
Troubleshooting Common Salt-Finish Problems
Most defects trace back to the broadcast window. Pits that look like faint dimples instead of crisp craters mean the concrete was too hard when the salt went down — the crystals rode the surface instead of embedding. There is no fix after the fact beyond a light acid wash to add general texture, so on multi-section pours, treat each section the moment it hits thumbprint firmness rather than waiting to do the whole slab at once. The opposite failure, salt pressed in too early, buries crystals completely; they dissolve during the wash and leave subsurface voids that pop open under traffic a year later as small spalls. Patch those with a polymer-modified patching compound tinted to match, and press a few salt crystals into the patch while it is plastic so the repair reads as original texture.
Whitish haze after the wash-out is usually undissolved salt residue or early efflorescence; a second rinse with a stiff broom, or a dilute vinegar wash followed by a clean-water rinse, clears it. If pits collect standing water after rain, the slab’s overall slope is the culprit — decorative finish cannot fix a flat pour, and a slab that should have been placed at 1/4 inch per foot of fall will pond regardless of texture. Finally, resist the urge to power-wash at high pressure every season: a 3,000 PSI turbo nozzle held close will erode pit rims and blur the texture you paid for. Keep the wand at 40-degree fan, 12 inches back, under 2,000 PSI.
Salt Finish vs. the Alternatives
Against its decorative rivals, the salt finish occupies a sweet spot. A broom finish costs nothing but looks utilitarian. Exposed aggregate delivers richer texture at $4 to $8 per square foot extra, with a more involved surface-retarder process. Stamping offers pattern and color at the highest cost and the highest skill barrier. Salting gives genuine visual character, real slip resistance, and near-zero material cost, demanding only good timing in exchange. There is also a modern workaround worth knowing: for existing slabs, a salt-look can be faked with a pitted-texture overlay or even a stenciled coating, but nothing matches the soft, tumbled authenticity of crystals dissolved out of the real surface. For a warm-climate pool deck on a budget, the original 1960s technique is still the one to beat.
