Why Raking Works: The Ice Dam Connection

Ice dams need two ingredients: snow on the roof and heat escaping from the house that melts the bottom of that snowpack. Shingles shed running water, not standing water, so the pond finds nail holes and laps.

For the blade, 24 inches wide moves more snow but loads your arms faster; 16 to 20 inches is the sustainable choice for most people. How to Rake a Roof Correctly

  1. Rake early, while snow is fresh. Powder pulls easily; snow that has thawed and refrozen bonds to the shingles and will not release without damage. The best window is during or just after the storm.

  3. Take thin bites. Pull 2 to 4 inches of depth per stroke rather than hooking the whole pack. Start at the eave edge and work upslope in strips.

  5. Leave the last inch. A thin snow layer is your shingles’ bodyguard; the goal is removing load and meltwater fuel, not a bare roof.
  6. Mind the surroundings. Snow coming off can shear gutters, so lift the blade over the gutter line rather than levering against it, and keep everyone, especially kids and dogs, away from the eave while you work. Stay far from service drops and never rake near power lines with an aluminum pole.

Mistakes That Cause Damage

Chipping at ice is the big one. North-facing slopes, shaded eaves, and roofs above cathedral ceilings and skylights dam first, so if you only rake part of the roof, rake those.

When a Rake Isn’t Enough

Raking treats symptoms. If you fight ice dams every winter, the disease is heat loss: thin attic insulation, air leaks around can lights and chases, and weak ventilation keeping the roof deck warm. Air sealing plus insulation to R-49 or better, paired with balanced soffit-and-ridge ventilation, fixes the cause and typically pays for itself in energy savings. Heat cable along the eaves is the middle option for problem spots like north-facing valleys. But even in a well-built house, a big-snow winter still justifies the tool; keep the rake hanging in the garage, use it while the snow is soft, and that February ceiling stain stays hypothetical.
