The right soundproof flooring underlay is the layer that sits between your finished floor and the subfloor, absorbing impact noise and reducing the sound that travels between rooms and between floors. Understanding IIC and STC Ratings

Two numbers tell you how well an assembly controls sound, and higher is better for both. They describe the whole floor-ceiling assembly, not the underlay alone, but a good underlay raises both.

  • IIC (Impact Insulation Class): Measures resistance to impact noise like footsteps. Many building codes require a minimum of IIC 50 for multifamily floors; higher is quieter.
  • STC (Sound Transmission Class): Measures resistance to airborne noise like voices. An STC of 50 or above is a common target for separating units.

Cork Underlayment

Foam Underlayment

Foam is the most common and affordable underlayment, but its acoustic performance varies widely. Basic thin foam offers only modest sound reduction and is more about smoothing minor subfloor imperfections and cushioning a floating floor.

For better acoustics, look for higher-density acoustic foam or combination products with an attached vapor barrier and improved IIC ratings. Foam is lightweight, easy to install, and budget-friendly, making it fine for single-family homes where you mainly want a bit of softness and minor noise reduction, but it’s generally outperformed by cork and rubber for serious soundproofing.

Floating Floors and Soundproofing

Underlayment is most relevant with floating floors (laminate, click LVP, and floating engineered wood), where the floor isn’t fastened down and the underlay sits directly beneath it. The underlay does double duty: it cushions the floating floor and dampens sound.

For glue-down and nail-down floors, sound control often relies on a different approach, such as acoustic mats embedded in the assembly or sound-rated subfloor systems. Thickness, Density, and Real Performance

A common misconception is that thicker underlay automatically means quieter floors. Density matters as much as, and often more than, thickness. A thin, dense rubber underlay can outperform a much thicker piece of low-density foam at reducing impact noise, because mass is what blocks sound transmission. When comparing products, look at both the thickness and the material density, not just one number.

That said, you can’t simply use the thickest underlay available, because flooring manufacturers specify a maximum underlay thickness for their floating floors. Exceed it and the locking joints flex too much, leading to gaps, separation, and a voided warranty. The sweet spot is the densest, best-rated acoustic underlay that still falls within your flooring’s approved thickness range. Always cross-check the underlay’s specs against the flooring manufacturer’s requirements before buying, since a mismatch can ruin both the acoustics and the floor itself.

Match the underlay to your needs and your building’s rules. In a condo or apartment, check your building’s required IIC rating first, then choose a tested product (often rubber or quality cork) that meets or exceeds it. In a two-story house, cork or a mid-grade acoustic foam may be plenty to quiet upstairs footsteps.

Factor in thickness and compatibility with your flooring, and don’t forget that a vapor barrier may be needed over concrete subfloors. Investing in proper soundproof flooring underlay during installation costs far less than trying to fix noise problems afterward, and in shared buildings it can be the difference between a peaceful home and an ongoing dispute with the neighbors.
