How to Tell the Valve Is the Problem

Common Valve Types You Will Encounter

Step 2: Disconnect Power
Pop the solenoid wires off using a pair of linesman pliers. Cap them with a wire nut temporarily so they do not fall into the mud. Take a photo first, white is typically common and the colored wire matches the controller zone.
Step 3: Remove the Old Valve
If the valve has threaded unions on both sides, unscrew with channel-locks and lift it out. If it is glued directly to PVC pipe, cut the pipe 2 inches back from each side of the valve using a PVC cutter. Keep the cuts square. Pull the old valve out of the box and check for debris stuck to the diaphragm, this confirms the failure mode.
Step 4: Dry-Fit the New Valve
Install slip-fix or telescoping repair couplers on each side of the remaining pipe. These slide to bridge the gap left by the old valve. Orient the new valve with the arrow pointing in the direction of water flow, which is toward the heads, not back toward the main line. Reversed valves leak past the diaphragm and never close properly.
Step 5: Glue and Connect
Apply purple primer to all slip joints, wait 10 seconds, apply heavy coat of PVC cement, and push fully home with a quarter turn. Hold each joint for 30 seconds. Let the assembly sit for 5 minutes before pressurizing. For threaded connections use 3 to 4 wraps of Teflon tape, not pipe dope, on irrigation plastic.
Step 6: Wire and Test
Connect the common wire to one solenoid lead and the zone wire to the other, polarity does not matter on AC solenoids. Seal each connection inside a gel-filled waterproof wire nut, then test at the controller. Listen for the click of the solenoid and watch for a full pressure startup.
When You Have to Replace the Whole Manifold
If the valve box holds four or five valves on a cracked PVC manifold and two of them are already weeping, replace the entire manifold.
