The reason is texture, longevity, and the way light hits a real stone surface differently throughout the day. Choosing the Stone Type

Dry-Laid vs Mortared Installation

Dry-laid installation rests the stone on a 4-6 inch compacted gravel base topped with 1 inch of leveling sand. Joints are filled with polymeric sand or stone dust. The entire system flexes with seasonal ground movement, and individual stones can be lifted and reset if anything settles.

Mortared installation requires a poured concrete sub-slab as the foundation. The stone is set in mortar with grouted joints. The result is rigid and elegant, but any heaving cracks the mortar joints and repair becomes a major project. Mortared patios last best in mild climates with stable soil, like the southern half of the country.

Sizing and Layout Planning
