Straight Stairs: Complete Guide for Homeowners

The simplest staircase in any home is also the most practical. Straight stairs run in a single unbroken flight from one floor to the next without turns, landings, or curves — making them the cheapest to build, the easiest to navigate, and the simplest to code-approve in any US jurisdiction. If you are planning a new build, an addition, or a basement finish, a straight-run staircase will almost always be the right answer unless your floor plan forces something more complex. Understanding the code minimums, comfort dimensions, and layout rules lets you size the run correctly the first time.

What Counts as a Straight Run

A single-flight stair is any run where every tread is parallel to the one below it and the flight travels in one direction without interruption. No winders, no quarter landings, no L-shapes. The run can be any length, but practically speaking it is capped by the standard 8-foot or 9-foot ceiling height of the floor above.

A typical residential single-flight staircase has 13 to 16 risers between floors, depending on ceiling height and thickness of the floor framing. Each rise is usually 7 to 7-3/4 inches, and each tread depth is 10 to 11 inches.

Minimum Width Required by Code

The International Residential Code sets the minimum width of a residential stair at 36 inches, measured above the handrail. If you install a handrail on one side, the clear space from wall to rail is 31-1/2 inches minimum. With handrails on both sides, you need 27 inches of clear space between them.

Commercial stairs and multi-family buildings require wider dimensions. For single-family homes, 36 inches is the legal minimum, 42 inches feels comfortable, and 48 inches is standard in higher-end new construction. Anything under 36 inches will fail inspection.

The 2-Rise-Plus-Run Formula

Stair designers have used the same comfort formula for centuries. Two times the riser height plus the tread depth should equal between 24 and 25 inches. Stairs that fall in this range feel natural to walk. Stairs outside it feel awkward.

  • 7-inch rise + 11-inch tread: 25 inches (ideal)
  • 7-1/2 inch rise + 10-inch tread: 25 inches (standard)
  • 7-3/4 inch rise + 10-inch tread: 25-1/2 inches (legal max)
  • 6-1/2 inch rise + 12-inch tread: 25 inches (gentle climb)

Code caps the maximum riser at 7-3/4 inches and sets the minimum tread at 10 inches. Nosings extending 3/4 inch past the face of the riser are allowed and help prevent heel catches.

Calculating Total Run Length

To figure out how much floor space a single-flight staircase eats, multiply the number of treads (one fewer than the number of risers) by the tread depth, then add nosing overhang. For a typical 8-foot ceiling with 14 risers at 7-1/2 inches each:

  • 14 risers means 13 treads
  • 13 treads at 10 inches each = 130 inches = 10 feet 10 inches
  • Plus 3 to 6 inches of landing at top and bottom
  • Total run needed: roughly 11 feet 6 inches

This is why a single-flight layout works best in long narrow floor plans. If your house cannot fit 12 feet of continuous run, you need an L-shape or U-shape with a landing.

Headroom Requirements

Code requires at least 6 feet 8 inches of headroom measured vertically from the nosing of any tread. Miss this anywhere along the flight and you will fail inspection and bang your head every time you carry a laundry basket upstairs.

The tightest spot is usually at the top of the stairs where the floor above cuts across the stair path. When designing an opening in the upper floor, make the stair hole at least as long as the horizontal distance required to drop 6 feet 8 inches below the ceiling — typically 10 to 12 feet.

Handrails and Guardrails

Any stair with four or more risers needs at least one handrail on an open side. Handrails must be mounted 34 to 38 inches above the tread nosings, and they must be graspable — round rails between 1-1/4 and 2 inches in diameter, or flat rails with a graspable bottom edge.

If the stair has an open side more than 30 inches above the floor below, you also need a guardrail. Guards must be 36 inches tall and have balusters spaced no more than 4 inches apart so a 4-inch sphere cannot pass through.

Advantages of a Single-Flight Design

Builders default to straight stairs for good reasons.

  • Cheapest to build — no complex framing, winders, or extra headers
  • Easiest to navigate with furniture — no turning point to pivot a sofa around
  • Safest for kids and elderly users — uniform treads, no awkward winders
  • Fastest inspection — simple geometry passes code on the first try
  • Lowest material cost — standard-length stringers, no custom cuts
  • Easier for stair lifts if aging in place is a concern

When to Choose a Different Shape

The single-flight layout fails in a few specific situations. It eats 11 to 13 feet of horizontal floor space, which is too much for a tight house plan. It can feel institutional or dorm-like without a landing to break up the flight. In three-story homes, a single run from first floor to third floor is illegal — code requires a landing every 12 feet of vertical rise.

If any of those apply, an L-shape stair with one landing or a U-shape with a half-turn landing works better. Just expect higher framing costs and a slightly more complex inspection.

Typical Construction Cost

A basic builder-grade staircase built on site with pine treads and painted stringers runs $1,500 to $3,000 in materials and labor. An oak-tread stair with a stain-grade railing system runs $4,000 to $8,000. Prefabricated steel or cable-rail systems push $10,000 to $25,000 depending on the finish level. Even at the high end, a single-flight build costs less than an equivalent L-shape or curved design, which is one more reason it remains the default choice in US homes.
