  1. Make sure the subfloor is clean, sound, and within the flatness tolerance the tile requires.

Tile Mat vs. Cement Board

A common point of confusion is whether an uncoupling membrane replaces cement backer board. They solve different problems. Cement board adds a stable, water-tolerant substrate over wood subfloors and gives tile a sound surface to bond to, but it does not uncouple the tile from subfloor movement and it is not inherently waterproof.

An uncoupling membrane is thinner, builds up far less height, and specifically isolates the tile from in-plane movement while adding waterproofing in many systems. Lay out the cable spacing according to the manufacturer’s instructions, keep cables clear of areas where fixtures or cabinets will sit, and protect the wires during tiling.
