Plywood subfloors expand, contract, and flex with every footstep, while ceramic and porcelain tile do not. The right underlayment for tile on plywood bridges those two opposite worlds, absorbing movement and giving the thinset something stable to grab. Choose the wrong product or skip the layer entirely and you will be replacing grout lines in two years and full tiles in five. Why Plywood Alone Is Not Enough
Plywood moves. It swells with humidity changes, contracts when the heat kicks on in winter, and deflects under point loads like a refrigerator caster. Tile, by contrast, has zero tolerance for movement. The Tile Council of North America (TCNA) requires a deflection rating of L/360 or better for ceramic and L/720 for natural stone, and bare plywood rarely hits those numbers without help.
Beyond stiffness, plywood absorbs water. A small leak from a dishwasher seal can swell the panel by 3 to 5 percent, more than enough to lift tiles and crack grout. A proper underlayment isolates the tile from both movement and moisture.
The Four Real Options
Forget the dozens of off-brand products at big box stores. Four categories cover 99 percent of residential installations.

Cement Backer Board: The Workhorse
Cement backer board has been the default underlayment for tile on plywood since the 1980s for good reason. It is rigid, waterproof when sealed, dimensionally stable, and inexpensive. A 3-by-5-foot sheet of half-inch HardieBacker runs $15 to $18 at Home Depot, putting material cost at about $1 per square foot.
Use 1/4-inch board for floors with sound 3/4-inch tongue-and-groove plywood subfloor. Bump up to 1/2-inch when joists span more than 16 inches on center or when the existing subfloor is only 5/8 inch. Set the board in a full bed of modified thinset and screw every 8 inches with 1-1/4-inch backer board screws. Tape and mud all seams with alkali-resistant mesh tape.
Where Cement Board Falls Short
It is heavy, dusty to cut, and adds 1/4 to 1/2 inch of height to your finished floor. That extra height matters at thresholds, dishwasher openings, and existing cabinet toe-kicks. If you cannot afford the height, look at uncoupling membranes instead.
Uncoupling Membranes: The Modern Standard
Schluter Ditra changed the residential tile game. The polyethylene matrix sits just 1/8 inch thick, weighs almost nothing, and isolates tile from substrate movement through a true uncoupling layer. It is also a vapor management layer, letting trapped moisture escape sideways instead of bubbling up under the tile.
Cost runs $1.80 to $2.40 per square foot for the membrane alone, plus thinset above and below. Total installed cost ends up similar to cement board ($3 to $4 per square foot in materials), but the assembly is dramatically thinner and lighter. For renovations where height matters, Ditra wins almost every time.
One important caveat: the thinset under Ditra must be unmodified per Schluter, while the thinset on top can be modified. Mixing this up voids the warranty and can cause bond failures.
Foam-Core Backer Board for Wet Areas
Wedi and Kerdi-Board are extruded polystyrene foam coated with cement and fiberglass mesh. They are 100 percent waterproof, lightweight, and easy to cut with a utility knife. For shower floors, steam rooms, or any area with serious moisture exposure, foam board is worth the premium.
Expect to pay $4 to $6 per square foot for material alone. The boards are typically 1/2 or 5/8 inch thick. For dry residential floors, the cost rarely justifies the upgrade unless you need waterproofing along with structural support.
Self-Leveling Underlayment Over Plywood
For floors that are out of plane by more than 1/4 inch in 10 feet, no membrane or board will fix the problem. You need to flatten first. Self-leveling underlayment like Mapei Novoplan 2 or Laticrete NXT Level pours like pancake batter and finds its own level.

- Apply two coats of acrylic primer (Mapei Primer T or equivalent)
- Staple metal lath every 6 inches if pour exceeds 3/8 inch
- Mix SLU per bag instructions, typically 4.5 quarts of water per 50-pound bag
- Pour starting from the far corner and work toward the door
- Use a gauge rake and smoother to spread, then leave it alone
SLU costs $1.50 to $2 per square foot at 1/4-inch depth. After the pour cures for 24 hours, install your chosen membrane or backer board on top. It is an extra step, but flat substrate is non-negotiable for large-format tile.
Tile Size Drives the Decision
Big tiles demand stiffer assemblies. A 4-inch ceramic tile forgives a flexible floor. A 24-by-48-inch porcelain plank does not.
- Tile under 12 inches: 1/4-inch cement board or Ditra works
- 12 to 18 inch tile: 1/2-inch cement board or Ditra XL
- Tile over 18 inches: Ditra XL plus flatness tolerance of 1/8 inch in 10 feet
- Natural stone (any size): minimum L/720 deflection, often requires double subfloor

- Tiling immediately over fresh SLU without checking moisture content
Final Thoughts on Picking the Right Layer
For a typical bathroom or kitchen renovation over sound plywood, 1/4-inch cement board or Schluter Ditra both deliver excellent results for under $4 per square foot installed. Choose Ditra if floor height is tight, choose cement board if budget is tighter than 50 cents per square foot. For showers and wet rooms, spend the extra on foam-core. And for any floor that is wavy or out of plane, pour self-leveler first and tile second. The underlayment is the part nobody sees, but it is the part that decides whether your floor lasts five years or fifty.
