If your floor has started rising at the seams, lifting in the middle of planks, or creating a noticeable wave you can feel under bare feet, you’re dealing with warped laminate flooring. The good news: laminate warps for predictable reasons, and most of them are fixable without ripping out the entire floor. The bad news: warping is almost always a symptom of an installation or moisture problem that will keep recurring until you address the underlying cause. Patching the visible damage without solving the root issue is wasted effort.

The Five Common Warp Patterns
Buckling raises plank edges in a tent shape, usually along a seam. Cupping creates concave dishing across plank width, with the edges higher than the center. Crowning is the opposite, where the center sits higher than the edges. Peaking pushes adjacent planks upward at the joint like a small mountain. End-gapping pulls plank ends apart and leaves visible spaces.
Each pattern points to a different cause. Buckling and peaking usually mean blocked expansion gaps. Cupping indicates moisture from below. Crowning often follows excessive surface moisture or spilled liquid. End-gapping suggests low humidity and over-dried planks.
Cause One: Missing or Blocked Expansion Gap
Laminate flooring expands and contracts with temperature and humidity. Manufacturers require a 1/4 to 1/2 inch expansion gap around the entire perimeter and at every fixed object: walls, columns, kitchen islands, door frames, and pipes. When installers skip this gap or tile baseboards directly trap the floor, expansion has nowhere to go and the floor lifts.
Fix: pull baseboards and quarter-round, undercut door jambs, and trim plank edges back to create proper clearance. A trim saw or oscillating multi-tool handles this without removing the entire floor. Reinstall trim with a 1/16 inch gap above the laminate surface so the floor can still move freely.
Cause Two: Subfloor Moisture
Concrete slabs and even plywood subfloors release moisture upward. Without a vapor barrier, that moisture saturates the laminate’s HDF core, which swells and cups. ASTM F2170 in-situ relative humidity testing should be done before installation. Slabs above 75 percent RH require either a 6 mil polyethylene vapor barrier or a topical moisture mitigation coating.
Diagnostic test: tape a 12 by 12 inch piece of clear plastic to your concrete floor for 72 hours. Condensation under the plastic confirms moisture migration. The fix in this case is removing the laminate, applying a topical sealer like Bostik Blockade or Mapei Planiseal MRB, and reinstalling with proper underlayment.
Cause Three: Surface Water Damage
A dishwasher leak, an overflowing sink, or a houseplant saucer that drips for weeks all push water into laminate’s vulnerable seams. Standard laminate is not waterproof. Within hours of seam saturation, the HDF core swells, lifts the wear layer, and creates permanent crowning.
Affected planks cannot be repaired; the swelling is irreversible. Click-lock laminate allows individual plank replacement: disassemble from the nearest wall, swap damaged boards, reassemble. Always keep 10 percent overage from original installation in climate-controlled storage for exactly this scenario.
Cause Four: Wrong Underlayment
Laminate requires an underlayment that provides cushioning and, on slab installations, vapor protection. Pre-attached underlayment from the manufacturer is convenient but not always sufficient. Many budget products attach only a thin 1 mm foam without integrated vapor barrier.
For concrete subfloors, add a separate 6 mil polyethylene vapor barrier under the underlayment regardless of what’s attached to the plank. For plywood over crawl spaces, use a 3-in-1 underlayment like Floormuffler LVT or QuietWalk Plus, both with built-in moisture protection. Skipping this layer is one of the most common reasons floors warp during the first summer.
Cause Five: HVAC and Humidity Extremes
Laminate performs best between 30 and 50 percent relative humidity. Homes that swing from 15 percent winter dry to 70 percent summer humid stress laminate beyond design limits. Vacation properties and second homes that sit unconditioned for weeks often develop warping problems first.
Run your HVAC year-round or use a whole-house humidifier in winter and dehumidifier in summer to keep indoor RH between 30 and 50 percent. The energy cost is minor compared to floor replacement.
When Repair Is Realistic and When It Isn’t
Localized buckling at one seam from blocked expansion: highly repairable, often without removing planks. Cupping in a single room from a known moisture event that’s been resolved: maybe repairable with replacement of affected planks. Wholesale warping across an entire floor with active moisture migration: replace the floor and fix the moisture source first.
If the warping covers more than 15 percent of the installed area, full replacement is almost always cheaper than spot repair when you factor in labor and the inability to perfectly match older plank colors.

Wipe spills immediately. Use felt pads under furniture. Trim pet nails. Don’t steam-mop laminate ever, regardless of marketing claims. Done right, even budget laminate lasts 12 to 15 years without significant warping. Skip the prevention basics and warped laminate flooring becomes a chronic problem you’ll fight every season.
