Water Pipes Knocking: Why It Happens and How to Stop It Permanently

That sharp bang you hear when the washing machine fills or the toilet shuts off is not just annoying — it is a structural problem in slow motion. Water pipes knocking is almost always caused by water hammer, the shock wave that travels through your plumbing when fast-moving water slams to a stop against a closed valve. Each impact stresses pipe joints, valves, and fittings. Over months and years, the cumulative damage causes leaks at solder joints, premature failure of supply hoses, and burst connections at the worst possible moments. The good news is that nearly every cause has a $20 to $80 fix that an average homeowner can complete in an afternoon.

What Is Water Hammer Exactly

Water moving through a half-inch copper line in a typical home travels at 4 to 8 feet per second. When a fast-closing valve — like a washing machine solenoid or a toilet fill valve — shuts in under a tenth of a second, the entire column of moving water has to stop instantly. The kinetic energy converts into a pressure spike, sometimes exceeding 200 psi against a system normally rated for 60 to 80 psi. That spike rebounds along the pipe, hitting elbows and tees, and the impact translates to the audible bang.

Houses built before 1985 had vertical air chambers — short capped pipe stubs above each fixture — that compressed and absorbed the spike. Modern code replaced air chambers with mechanical arrestors, but many homes still rely on old air chambers that have lost their air pocket and no longer cushion anything.

Recharge Old Air Chambers

If your house was built before 2000 and has no visible water hammer arrestors, you likely have air chambers full of water. Restoring them takes 15 minutes and zero parts:

  1. Shut off the main water supply at the meter or main valve
  2. Open the highest faucet in the house all the way
  3. Open the lowest faucet (usually a basement utility sink or outdoor hose bib) and let it drain completely
  4. Close the lowest faucet, turn the main back on, and let the highest faucet run until air is purged
  5. Close the highest faucet

Draining the system pulls air back into the chambers. About 60% of the time this single procedure eliminates the knocking entirely.

Install Water Hammer Arrestors

If recharging air chambers does not work or your home never had them, mechanical arrestors are the permanent fix. A water hammer arrestor is a sealed cylinder containing a piston backed by a compressed gas charge. The piston absorbs the pressure spike and the gas resets it for the next event.

Secure Loose Pipes

Sometimes the noise is not water hammer at all but loose pipes vibrating against framing during normal flow. Run water through the suspect line and place a hand on the pipe at various points along the run. Vibration you can feel means the pipe needs better support.

Add cushioned pipe straps every 6 to 8 feet on horizontal runs and every 10 feet on vertical runs. Foam pipe insulation between the pipe and any wood framing absorbs the buzzing as well. Avoid metal-on-metal contact at all costs — that is what amplifies vibration into audible noise.

Replace Failing Toilet Fill Valves

Older Fluidmaster and Korky fill valves used a plastic ballcock that bounced as it closed, generating a slow rumble or chatter rather than a single bang. The fix is a $15 valve replacement.
