Weatherstripping for Doors: Types and Installation

Walk the weatherization aisle and you will find a dozen products that all claim to stop drafts, priced anywhere from $4 to $40. Choosing the right weatherstripping for doors comes down to three questions: how big is the gap, how often does the door get used, and how long do you want the seal to last? Foam tape costs the least and dies the fastest; silicone and kerf-style seals cost more and shrug off a decade of slamming. This guide sorts every common type, then walks through installation so the seal actually seals.

V-Strip (Tension Seal)

V-strip is a folded length of vinyl or spring metal that sits in the gap between door and jamb and springs open to fill it. Vinyl V-strip (often sold as “V-Seal,” about $6 for 17 feet) is self-adhesive: clean the jamb with rubbing alcohol, cut with scissors, peel and stick with the fold’s opening facing outdoors. Bronze spring-metal V-strip costs more — roughly $15 to $20 per door — and gets nailed on with small brads, but it lasts 20 to 30 years and looks right on older homes. V-strip excels on the hinge and latch sides of a door because it seals through a range of gap widths and handles friction well. Its weakness is very uneven gaps; it cannot fill more than about 1/4 inch.

Foam Tape

Closed-cell foam tape is the $4 fix: peel, stick to the door stop, done in ten minutes. It comes in thicknesses from 1/8 to 1/2 inch and compresses to seal gaps that vary along the jamb, which nothing else does as cheaply. The trade-off is lifespan — foam takes a compression set within one to three seasons, and sun exposure crumbles it. Use it on low-traffic doors, as a mid-winter emergency fix, or on the attic hatch, and buy the high-density EPDM versions (around $8) rather than bargain open-cell foam, which leaks air right through its own structure.

Felt

Felt strip, plain or wool-blend, is the oldest product in the aisle and survives mostly on price and nostalgia. It is stapled or tacked to the door stop and works by friction contact rather than compression. Expect one to two years of service, poor moisture tolerance, and mediocre air sealing. About the only modern argument for felt is on interior doors where you want to quiet a rattle without adding closing resistance.

Tubular Rubber, Vinyl, and Silicone Bulb

Bulb seals are hollow tubes of rubber, vinyl, or silicone that compress as the door closes, and they are the standard for serious air sealing. They come self-adhesive, nail-on with a metal or wood flange, or slotted for kerf mounting. Silicone versions stay flexible from -40°F to well past 150°F and outlast vinyl by years; expect $12 to $25 per door. Bulb seals need a consistent gap to work — measure the door-to-stop distance at several points and pick a bulb diameter about 1/16 inch larger than the widest gap. Oversize bulb makes the door hard to latch; undersize leaves a leak.

Kerf-Style Seals: The Modern Standard

Nearly every prehung exterior door built since the 1990s uses kerf weatherstripping — a bulb or fin seal with a barbed spine that presses into a thin saw slot (kerf) where jamb meets stop. Replacement is the easiest job in this article: grab an end, pull the old seal out, press the new one into the slot starting at a corner, and trim to length. Kits run $12 to $20 for a full door perimeter at Home Depot or Lowe’s, in foam-filled, vinyl-bulb, and silicone versions. Bring a cross-section of the old seal to the store; profiles vary by door brand and a mismatched spine will not grip the kerf.

Door Sweeps and Shoes: Sealing the Bottom

The under-door gap needs its own hardware, and there are four ways to close it:

  • Screw-on sweep: an aluminum bar with a vinyl fin or brush, fastened to the interior face of the door. Costs $10 to $25, installs in 15 minutes with the door hung. Brush sweeps handle uneven floors and thick carpet better than fins.
  • Slide-on U-shaped sweep: wraps the door bottom; good for gaps up to 1 inch on garage-side doors.
  • Door shoe: an aluminum channel with a bulb gasket that caps the bottom edge of the slab and seals down against the threshold. Most durable option, but the door comes off its hinges and often needs 1/8 to 1/4 inch trimmed. Around $20 to $35.
  • Automatic door bottom: a spring-loaded seal that drops when the door closes and lifts clear when it opens — the answer when a sweep would drag on interior flooring. $25 to $60.

To install a screw-on sweep: close the door, hold the sweep so the fin lightly compresses against the threshold, mark the slotted screw holes, drill 1/16-inch pilots, and drive the screws snug but not tight. Test the swing; the slots allow a few millimeters of adjustment before you tighten fully.

Installing Perimeter Seals Right

Whatever product you chose, the same rules make or break it. Square the door first — tighten hinges and confirm an even gap, because weatherstripping cannot fix a sagging slab. Work in moderate temperatures; adhesives bond poorly below 50°F, so warm the strip indoors and clean every surface with rubbing alcohol before sticking anything. Install in one continuous run per side where possible, butting corners tightly, with the seal positioned so the door compresses it about 20 to 50 percent when latched. Then repeat the dollar-bill test around the full perimeter: firm drag everywhere means you are done.

Special Cases: French Doors, Sliders, and Garage Entries

Double doors and sliders break the standard playbook. On French doors, the meeting point between the two slabs is the leak, sealed by an astragal — the T-shaped strip attached to the fixed (inactive) door. Replacement astragal weatherstripping is brand-specific, so photograph the profile and check the door manufacturer’s parts page before improvising with foam tape, which telegraphs as a lumpy seam. The fixed panel’s flush bolts also need to pull the slab tight top and bottom; loose bolts mimic failed weatherstripping.

Sliding patio doors seal with fin-style or brush pile weatherstrip that slides rather than compresses. Pile weatherstrip with a center fin (sold in rolls, about $10 for 18 feet) slides into channels on the panel edges; measure the pile height and backing width from the old strip before ordering. Do not put compression foam on a slider — it drags, tears, and jams the roller adjustment.

The garage-to-house door needs the same treatment as an exterior door plus attention to code: it is typically fire-rated and self-closing, so use surface products that do not interfere with the closer, and consider a smoke-gasket-style kerf seal. For the garage door itself, the bottom rubber astragal on the big door plus vinyl side and top seals ($30 to $60 for a kit) tame the worst air leaks in an attached garage.

Cost, Lifespan, and What to Buy

For a typical entry door, plan on $20 to $50 in materials for a complete refresh — kerf seal or V-strip on the perimeter plus a sweep — and about an hour of work. Silicone bulb and metal V-strip last 10 to 20 years; vinyl products 5 to 8; foam tape 1 to 3.
