What Color is Mold: Complete Guide for Homeowners

Homeowners tend to picture mold as a single thing — a black splotch behind a toilet or a gray fuzz creeping up a basement wall. Asking “what color is mold” is actually the wrong question, because mold shows up in at least seven distinct colors, each tied to different species, different moisture sources, and wildly different health risks. A white patch might be harmless mycelium on firewood. A nearly identical-looking patch on drywall could be early-stage aspergillus that triggers asthma in three months.

The Short Answer

Mold can be black, green, white, gray, pink, orange, yellow, brown, or blue. The color depends on the species, the substrate it is eating, the age of the colony, and the moisture level. Two colonies of the exact same species can even show different colors based on whether they are feeding on drywall paper, wood cellulose, or soap scum.

Black Mold: The One Everyone Fears

Black mold is shorthand for Stachybotrys chartarum, but black-looking molds include Cladosporium, Alternaria, and several aspergillus strains. True Stachybotrys has a slimy, greenish-black surface and grows only on materials with a cellulose content saturated by water for at least a week — flooded drywall, soaked carpet padding, wet plywood.

Not every black spot is toxic. Dark stains in shower grout are almost always Aureobasidium or Cladosporium, a cosmetic issue you can clean with a 1:10 bleach-to-water spray. The real toxic species needs ongoing water damage and usually hides inside wall cavities, not on visible surfaces.

Green Mold: The Most Common Household Variety

Green colonies are usually Penicillium or Cladosporium. Penicillium is the blue-green fuzz you see on forgotten bread and in damaged refrigerator seals. Cladosporium tends to be olive-green to dark-green and loves cool surfaces: window sills, bathroom ceilings, the back side of wardrobes against exterior walls.

Both species release spores in serious volume and are common asthma triggers. A small green patch under 1 square foot can usually be cleaned by a homeowner with a HEPA-filtered respirator, vinegar, and hydrogen peroxide. Anything larger belongs to a remediator.

White Mold: Often Misidentified

White growth on a basement wall is sometimes not mold at all — it is efflorescence, a salt deposit pushed out of concrete by evaporating moisture. Efflorescence dissolves in water and does not regrow. Mold is fibrous, does not dissolve, and often darkens as it matures into gray, green, or black.

True white mold is typically early-stage Aspergillus or Penicillium. Catch it here and you have saved yourself a major remediation bill. A patch this young is colonizing, not yet sporulating heavily, and a 6 to 12 inch area can be handled with N95 protection and standard mold cleaner.

Pink and Red Growth

Pink slime in showers and around sink drains is rarely mold — it is Serratia marcescens, an airborne bacterium that colonizes soap residue and tile grout. It is easy to scrub away and not dangerous to healthy adults, though immunocompromised people should avoid direct contact.

True pink molds (Fusarium, Aureobasidium) are rarer and grow on wet carpets, humidifier tanks, and window condensation pools. Fusarium produces mycotoxins and belongs on the call-a-pro list.

Orange and Yellow Colonies

Orange mold shows up on wood decks, firewood, compost, and sometimes on bathroom fixtures. Most orange growth is Aleuria aurantia (orange peel fungus) or slime mold, which is ugly but not harmful to building materials. The bright-yellow Serpula lacrymans — dry rot fungus — is the exception and a structural emergency. It eats framing lumber, spreads through masonry, and can travel 30 feet from its water source. Dry rot identification is one case where guessing costs thousands; confirm with a pro.

Why Color Alone Is Not Enough

Experienced remediators do not diagnose by color. A positive species ID requires a swab or tape-lift sample sent to a lab, which costs $35 to $75 per sample and turns around in 3 to 5 days. Color gets you in the ballpark; lab work answers the health question.

What matters more than species is the moisture source. No mold grows without persistent moisture above 60 percent relative humidity at the surface. Kill the leak, drop the humidity below 50 percent with a dehumidifier, and most colonies cannot regrow even if spores remain.

Most mold problems are moisture problems wearing a color costume.
