Walk into any home center and the drywall aisle quietly hides one of the most common mistakes DIY remodelers make. Standard 1/2-inch sheetrock works fine for walls, but used overhead it sags between joists within a year or two, especially over time, with humidity and gravity working against it. What size drywall for ceiling applications usually depends on three factors: joist spacing, room humidity, and whether you’re hanging it perpendicular or parallel. Second, sound. The thicker board reduces airborne and impact noise transmission noticeably. Third, finish quality. Five-eighths inch hides minor framing irregularities better and takes paint with fewer telegraphed seams.

The downside is weight. A 4-by-12 sheet of 5/8 inch weighs about 80 pounds versus 60 pounds for 1/2 inch. For a one-person installation, this matters a lot.

Sheet Length and Layout Strategy

Drywall comes in 4-by-8, 4-by-10, 4-by-12, and 4-by-16 sheets. For ceilings, longer is almost always better. Fewer butt joints mean fewer visible seams to feather and fewer chances for cracks. A 12-foot ceiling sheet runs across most rooms in a single piece, eliminating end joints entirely.

Hang sheets perpendicular to the joists — meaning the long edge crosses the joists rather than running along them. Perpendicular hanging engages more joists per sheet, distributes load better, and produces a flatter finished surface. Code in most jurisdictions actually requires perpendicular installation for ceilings with 24-inch joist spacing.

Special Cases That Change the Answer

Garages, kitchens, and bathrooms need additional consideration. Attached garages typically require Type X 5/8-inch fire-rated drywall on the ceiling per IRC R302.6. Bathroom ceilings benefit from moisture-resistant (sometimes called “green board” or “purple board”) drywall in 1/2-inch sag-resistant or 5/8-inch standard. Kitchens, despite the steam, rarely need moisture-resistant board unless the room lacks proper ventilation.

Two T-braces cut from 2×4 lumber make a budget alternative for one or two sheets. Second, overdriving screws — paper torn around a fastener creates a weak point. Set the screw bit’s clutch carefully and aim for a slight dimple, not a tear.

Third, skipping back-blocking at butt joints. A scrap of plywood or a Trim-Tex butt-board behind every butt joint makes those seams nearly invisible after taping. Worth the extra 30 minutes per joint.
