Ceilings are the hardest drywall in the house — every sheet fights gravity while you hang it, and every flaw catches raking light from the windows below for the life of the room. Get a drywall ceiling right and it disappears; get it slightly wrong and you’ll stare at a crowned butt joint every evening at sunset. This guide covers the overhead-specific decisions: which board thickness prevents sag, how to lay out sheets, how to hang them safely with a lift, the screw pattern that keeps them up, and finishing techniques for joints you can’t hide.
Board Selection: Thickness and Sag Resistance
The ceiling question that matters most is sag. Standard 1/2-inch board on joists 24 inches on center will eventually belly between fasteners — especially under insulation weight or attic humidity — creating a wavy, quilted look. The rules:
- Joists 16″ on center: 1/2-inch lightweight sag-resistant board (UltraLight-type) or standard 1/2-inch is acceptable.
- Joists or trusses 24″ on center: Use 5/8-inch board or a 1/2-inch high-strength ceiling board rated for 24-inch spacing. Never standard 1/2-inch.
- Below unconditioned attics with blown insulation: Favor 5/8-inch regardless — it carries insulation load and resists humidity sag better.
- Garage ceilings under living space: Code typically requires 5/8-inch Type X fire-rated board. Check local amendments.
5/8-inch sheets weigh about 70 pounds in 4×8 — real weight overhead — but they also stiffen the plane, quiet footfall from above, and take texture more evenly. If you’re skim-planning a flat, paint-grade ceiling, the extra stiffness of 5/8 is cheap insurance. Never hang ceiling board with water-stained or bowed joists unfixed; strapping or sistering first costs an hour, while a wavy finished ceiling costs a redo. Layout: Perpendicular, Staggered, and Long
Three layout rules produce a ceiling that finishes flat:
- Run sheets perpendicular to the joists. Crossing the framing lets each sheet bear on many joists, stiffening the plane and cutting sag roughly in half versus parallel hanging.
- Stagger butt joints. Offset end joints at least 4 feet between rows, and keep them off the room’s center where light rakes worst. Butt joints (untapered ends meeting) are the hardest joints to hide, so plan sheets to minimize them.
- Use the longest sheets the room allows. A 12-foot room hung with 12-foot sheets has zero butt joints. The delivery hassle pays for itself in finishing time.
Mark joist centerlines on the top plates before lifting the first sheet — hunting for framing while holding board overhead is how screws miss and paper breaks.
Hanging: The Lift Is Not Optional
Ceilings go up first, before walls, so wall sheets later support the ceiling perimeter. For the lifting itself, rent a drywall lift ($40 a day): it cranks the sheet flat to the joists, holds it motionless, and turns a dangerous two-person press into a controlled one-person task. (The old-school alternative — two people, two deadman T-braces, and a prayer — is how boards and vertebrae get cracked.) With the sheet clamped tight to framing, fasten with 1-1/4-inch coarse-thread screws (1-5/8-inch for 5/8 board): every 12 inches in the field on 16-inch centers, every 8 inches where joists run 24-inch centers, and along every edge. Drive to a paper-intact dimple. Tight board contact before screwing matters more overhead than anywhere — a screw that pulls the sheet up to the joist, rather than pinning an already-tight sheet, is a future pop. Finishing Overhead: Strong First, Smooth Last
Ceiling joints live under stress — trusses lift seasonally, joists deflect under attic loads — so bed strength is the priority. Embed paper tape in all-purpose or setting-type compound (never mesh tape with bucket mud on a ceiling), and consider Easy Sand 45 for the tape coat on truss-framed ceilings for its crack resistance. Then widen: a 10-inch second coat and a 12-inch-plus finish coat, feathered to nothing. Truss uplift deserves its own paragraph. In cold climates, roof trusses arch upward in winter, cracking the ceiling-to-wall corner joint no matter how well it’s taped. The fix is mechanical, not mud: fasten ceiling board no closer than 16 inches to the wall at truss-crossing corners and let floating corner clips or the wall board itself hold the edge, so the truss moves without tearing the joint.
Texture or Flat?
Flat (smooth) ceilings are the current default in new construction and remodels — they read modern and make rooms feel taller, but they demand a Level 4 minimum finish, and Level 5 under skylights or wall-length windows, because overhead surfaces catch raking light from every direction. Textures — orange peel, knockdown — still make sense as pragmatic choices: they hide joint imperfections, spray on in hours, and match existing ceilings elsewhere in the house. Skip heavy stomp and dated acoustic “popcorn” entirely; popcorn hides everything but kills resale, and pre-1980 popcorn may contain asbestos — test before disturbing it.

Ceilings price 20 to 40% above wall rates for the same finish level — the overhead premium is real and fair. A 12×16 bedroom ceiling (192 square feet) runs roughly $500 to $750 professionally hung and finished, or about $120 in materials plus a lift rental if you DIY over a long weekend.
Mistakes That Show Up at Sunset
- Standard 1/2-inch board on 24-inch trusses — guaranteed quilting within a few humid summers.
- Butt joints aligned in a row down the room’s center, directly in the raking-light lane.
- Screws driven through the paper face, holding nothing, popping through paint within a year.
- Skim-coating around, not over, a patched area — the halo flashes through every sheen above flat.
- Judging the finish under a bare bulb at night instead of a flashlight raked flat across the surface after priming.
Lights, Fans, and Openings Overhead
Ceilings carry more penetrations per sheet than walls — cans, fans, smoke detectors, HVAC boots — and each one is a chance to ruin a board. The clean workflow: measure twice from two reference walls, transfer to the sheet’s face, and cut recessed-light openings with a hole saw or adjustable circle cutter before lifting the sheet, or hang the sheet and rout openings against the fixture housing with a spiral saw. Never force a sheet over a proud electrical box; the paper tears around the flexed area and the break shows through paint forever. Ceiling boxes for fans must be fan-rated and framing-mounted — drywall never supports fixture weight, so a fan brace goes in before the board does.
Plan access panels while the framing is open, too: whole-house fan grilles, attic hatches, and plumbing accesses want blocking on all four sides so the drywall edges land supported rather than floating. Around HVAC boots, hold cuts within 1/8 inch and seal the gap with fire-rated sealant — that joint is an air-leak path into the attic that costs real heating dollars. Finally, keep a strong work light aimed across the ceiling while you fasten; overhead, you can’t step back the way you can from a wall, and the light tells you instantly when a screw missed the joist or a sheet edge sits proud.
