Every drywall job lives or dies by the mud. Pick the wrong drywall compound and you’ll fight cracking tape, endless sanding, or repairs that flash through paint — pick the right one for each coat and the work almost finishes itself. The confusing part is that the home center shelves five different buckets and bags that all look interchangeable. They’re not. Here’s what each type of joint compound actually is, when the pros reach for it, and a simple system for matching mud to coat.

The Two Families: Drying-Type vs Setting-Type

All joint compound splits into two chemistries. Drying-type mud comes premixed in buckets and boxes and hardens by evaporation — it shrinks as water leaves, takes 12 to 24 hours per coat, and stays water-soluble forever (you can rewet and rework it). Setting-type mud (“hot mud”) comes as powder in bags and hardens by a chemical reaction, like plaster — it sets in a labeled time (5 to 210 minutes), shrinks very little, dries harder than any bucket mud, and once set, it’s set, even in humidity. Bucket mud is about convenience and sandability; hot mud is about speed, strength, and depth. Most quality jobs use both.

All-Purpose: The Default Bucket

All-purpose compound (the green-lid bucket in USG’s color coding) is formulated to do every coat acceptably: it has the strongest bond of the drying types, which makes it the best bucket mud for embedding tape, and it works for fill and finish coats too. The trade-offs: it’s the heaviest to haul and hawk, it shrinks noticeably, and it sands harder than lightweight or topping mud. If you’re buying exactly one bucket for a small repair, buy all-purpose. Typical price: $15 to $20 for a 4.5-gallon bucket, covering roughly 450 square feet of board through a full three-coat finish when combined with other coats.

Lightweight All-Purpose: The Sanding-Friendly Compromise

Lightweight all-purpose (blue lid) cuts weight about 25% with perlite-type fillers, shrinks less, and sands dramatically easier. The cost is bond strength — it’s a fine tape embedder for most walls, but under mesh tape or in high-stress corners it’s weaker than standard all-purpose. Many finishers run lightweight for all three coats on whole houses purely for the sanding savings; purists embed with all-purpose or hot mud, then switch to lightweight for coats two and three. Topping: The Finish Specialist

Topping compound is engineered for the final skim only: low shrinkage, ultra-smooth trowel feel, and the easiest sanding of any mud. It achieves that by sacrificing bond strength, so the rule is absolute — never embed tape in topping compound. Use it for third coats, Level 5 skims, and polishing out repairs. Taping Compound: The First-Coat Specialist

Taping compound is topping’s mirror image: maximum bond and crack resistance for embedding paper tape and first-coating angles, at the cost of hard sanding. It shines on ceilings, curved work, and anywhere joints are structurally stressed. Most homeowners never buy it — all-purpose covers the same role acceptably — but on a whole-house job the taping/topping two-mud system is the classic professional workflow: taping mud to bed, topping mud to finish, nothing fighting you at either stage.

Setting-Type (Hot Mud): Speed and Strength

Setting compounds — Durabond and Easy Sand are the USG names everyone uses generically — are the power tools of the mud world. The number on the bag (Easy Sand 5, 20, 45, 90, 210) is the working time in minutes before the chemical set begins. What hot mud does that bucket mud can’t:

  • Same-day multi-coating: Tape with 45, fill with 45 two hours later, skim with bucket mud before dinner. Bucket-mud-only schedules take three days.
  • Deep fills without cracking: Prefill gaps, busted corners, and holes up to an inch deep; minimal shrinkage means no repeated refilling.
  • Moisture tolerance: Sets chemically even in a humid basement where bucket mud would stay soft for days.
  • Strength: Durabond dries nearly plaster-hard — excellent under stress, brutal to sand. Easy Sand is the sandable variant most people should buy.

The cautions: mix only what you can use (a batch setting in the pan is garbage), clean tools immediately, never wash slurry down a drain, and never mix hot mud in a pan with old dried bucket-mud crumbs — contamination accelerates set times unpredictably. An 18-pound bag runs $12 to $18.

One pairing rule that prevents most callbacks: mesh tape + bucket mud is a cracking machine. Fiberglass mesh stretches microscopically; only rigid setting compound locks it. Paper tape pairs with anything. Working Tips That Separate Smooth From Sanded-Forever

Thin bucket mud with a splash of water and mix to mayonnaise consistency before every use — factory-stiff mud drags and pocks. Apply thin coats and more of them; two 1/16-inch passes beat one 1/8-inch pass every time, because thick mud shrinks, cracks, and takes days to dry. Let each coat dry fully (uniformly light in color, no cool damp feel) before recoating. Widen each successive coat — roughly 6, 10, and 12 inches over flat joints — feathering edges to nothing with knife pressure on the outboard edge. And prime before judging: compound and paper absorb paint differently, so unprimed walls always look worse than they are. Storage, Leftovers, and Cold-Weather Realities

Compound has a shelf life and a temperature range, and both bite DIYers. Bucket mud must never freeze — a frozen-and-thawed bucket turns grainy and loses bond, so winter storage belongs in the basement, not the garage. Opened buckets keep for months if you scrape down the sides, press plastic wrap onto the mud surface, and add a half-inch of clean water on top before sealing the lid; pour the water off at the next use. Sour smell or pink-black mold means the biocides are exhausted — throw it out, because moldy mud grows through paint. Powdered setting compound is more forgiving in storage (years, if the bag stays dry) but unforgiving in the pan: humidity-hardened lumps in an old bag will flash-set your batch early.

Application temperature matters as much: keep rooms and surfaces above 55°F and ventilated while drying-type mud cures, or coats stay soft for days and can crack as they finally shrink. In humid basements or rainy weeks, either run a dehumidifier or switch to setting-type mud, which cures chemically regardless. One last habit that saves buckets and finishes alike — never return used mud from the pan to the bucket.
