Application Techniques for a Smooth Finish

Good results come down to thin coats and patience. Trying to build thickness in one pass creates bubbles, shrinkage cracks, and sanding nightmares.

First Coat (Tape Coat)

Apply a thin bed layer of mud about 1/16 inch thick over the joint using a 6-inch taping knife. Press paper tape into the wet mud, then wipe over the tape with the knife at a 45-degree angle to squeeze out excess. You want just enough mud under the tape to hold it with no dry spots or bubbles. Let this coat dry 24 hours in a room between 65 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit with reasonable ventilation.

Second Coat (Fill Coat)

Switch to a 10-inch knife. Apply a thin layer over the tape, feathering the edges 4 to 6 inches beyond the first coat on each side. The goal is to start hiding the tape edge without building a hump. Dry time is another 24 hours.

Third Coat (Skim Coat)

Use a 12-inch knife or a 14-inch finishing trowel. Apply the thinnest coat yet, feathering 2 to 3 inches beyond the second coat. This coat should be almost translucent at the edges. Freezing ruins it — frozen and thawed mud becomes lumpy and loses its binding properties. Powder-form mud stores longer, up to 12 months in dry conditions, because moisture is not part of the equation until you mix it.

After opening a bucket, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the mud before snapping the lid back on. This prevents the surface from skinning over. If you find a thin dried layer on top after storage, scrape it off and remix the compound. As long as it mixes smooth without lumps or a sour smell, it is still usable.
