Why Wire Nut Sizing Matters
A wire nut works by biting into the copper conductors with a tapered steel spring inside. The spring must contact every strand of every wire to distribute current evenly. Too small a wire nut and the spring does not engage properly. Too large and the wires can pull free under the slightest tug. NEC 110.14 requires “mechanically secure” connections, and a loose wire nut creates resistance, heat, and eventually a fire.

Putting a single 14 AWG wire into a yellow wire nut does not make a secure connection, even though it physically fits. The spring needs conductors filling the cavity for the mechanical grip to work.
If you have an odd wire count (three 12 AWG conductors, for example), the red wire nut is correct. Two 12 AWGs alone need a yellow wire nut. Four 12 AWGs also take a red. Six 12 AWGs require a larger blue winged or a medium-large size depending on brand.

Keep a mixed box of yellow, red, orange, and green grounding nuts in your electrical kit. These four sizes cover 95 percent of residential scenarios. Organize them by color in a small compartmentalized case so you are not hunting through a Ziploc bag on a ladder with the power off.
When to Call a Licensed Electrician
Wire nut installation is one of the most fundamental electrician skills, and also one of the most common points of failure in DIY work. If you have never made a wire nut connection before, practice on a scrap piece of NM-B cable with the power off before attempting live circuit work. If you are unsure whether a specific combination of wires fits a given size, err on the side of the larger nut (which is safer to oversize by one step than to undersize). And if the connection sits inside a junction box that will be covered permanently, pay an electrician to inspect your work before the drywall goes up.
